1. amazevt. 使……大為驚奇,使……驚愕。如:

Dave amazed his friends by leaving a well-paid job to travel around the world.戴夫離開了待遇優(yōu)厚的工作去周游世界,令朋友們非常吃驚。

amazed adj. 感到驚奇/驚訝。常用于be amazed that…, be amazed at, be amazed to see / hear / find…等結(jié)構(gòu)。如:

We were absolutely amazed at his rapid recovery.我們對(duì)他這么快就康復(fù)感到特別驚奇。

amazing adj. 好得驚人的;令人驚詫的,令人難以置信的。如:

Its amazing that no one else has applied for the job. 令人難以置信的是,竟然沒有別人來申請(qǐng)這個(gè)職位。

amazement n [u]吃驚,驚奇。常用于in amazement,to everyones amazement等結(jié)構(gòu)。如:

Nina looked at me with amazement. “I dont believe you,” she said.尼娜驚訝地看著我?!拔也幌嘈拧?她說。

2. attituden. [c]& n.[u] 心態(tài);感覺;態(tài)度;看法。后常跟介詞to 或towards。如:

Peters attitude towards women really scares me.彼得對(duì)女性的看法真令人害怕。

His attitude to his new job seemed to be very negative. 他對(duì)他的新工作態(tài)度似乎很消極。

3. impress vt.

(1)令人稱羨,使……留下深刻印象。常用于impress sb with/by sth結(jié)構(gòu)。如:

One candidate in particular impressed us with her knowledge. 有一位候選人的學(xué)識(shí)尤其給我們留下了深刻的印象。

(2)使(某人)了解(某事物的)重要性。常用于impress sth on sb結(jié)構(gòu)。如:

Father impressed on me the value of hard work.父親向我強(qiáng)調(diào)了努力工作的重要性。

impressive adj. 給人深刻印象的。如:

Alan Howard has been impressive in “Henry IV” at the National Theatre.

在國(guó)家大劇院上演的《亨利四世》中,阿蘭·霍華德的表演給人印象深刻。

impression n. [c](對(duì)人或事物的)印象。后面常跟介詞of,還常用于first impression of, make an impression on sb, get / have the impression that…等結(jié)構(gòu)中。如:

When it comes to job interviews, first impressions are important. 談到面試,第一印象很重要。

4. disappoint vt. 使(某人)失望。常用于disappoint sb,disappoint sbs hopes / expectations / plans等結(jié)構(gòu)中。如:

Im sorry to disappoint you, but there arent any tickets left.很抱歉讓您失望了,票沒了。

disappointed adj. 失望的,沮喪的。常用于 be disappointed in sb, be disappointed at/with/about sth, be disappointed to see / hear / find…, be disappointed that…等結(jié)構(gòu)。如:

Dad seemed more disappointed than angry. 與其說爸爸生氣,倒不如說他失望。

Visitors were disappointed to find the museum closed.看到博物館已關(guān)門,參觀者都很失望。

disappointing adj. 令人失望 / 沮喪 / 掃興的。如:

It rained most of the time we were in England, which was pretty disappointing.我們?cè)谟?guó)期間大部分時(shí)間在下雨,真是令人掃興。

disappointment n. [c] 失望,沮喪。常用于to somebodys(great)disappointment,disappointmentat/with/over,disappointment that…等結(jié)構(gòu)。n. [c] 令人失望的人或事物。常跟to / for sb。如:

He could see the disappointment in her eyes.他能看出她失望的眼神。

5. avoid vt.

(1)避免,防止(不好的事情發(fā)生)。常用于avoid (doing) something結(jié)構(gòu)。如:

It is important to take measures to avoid the risk of fire.采取措施避免火災(zāi)危險(xiǎn)很重要。

The book tells you how to avoid getting ill when travelling.這本書告訴你怎樣在旅行期間防止生病。

(2)(故意)避開,回避(某人或某事物)。如:

John was embarrassed and tried to avoid us the next day.約翰很尷尬,第二天設(shè)法躲著我們。

(3)逃避。常用于avoid (doing) something結(jié)構(gòu)。如:

There are ways of legally avoiding taxes. 有些合法避稅的辦法。

avoidable adj. 可以避免的。如:

Too many children are still injured in avoidable accidents.

仍有許多孩子在可以避免的事故中受傷。

6. cover vt.

(1)又作 cover up,遮蓋,遮蔽(以隱藏或保護(hù))。常用于cover sth with sth結(jié)構(gòu)。如:

Dan covered his face with his hands.丹用手蓋住臉。

The bulletin board was covered with messages. 布告牌上寫滿了信息。

(2)包括,涉及;處理。如:

Are there any areas you feel are not covered adequately in the book? 你覺得書中還有些領(lǐng)域沒有充分論述嗎?

(3)走完(一段路程);占(多少面積)。如:

They were hoping to cover 40 miles yesterday.他們本來希望昨天走四十英里。

The city covers 25 square miles. 這座城市面積是25平方英里。

(4)(新聞媒體)報(bào)道。如:

Ive just returned from covering the Cambodian war.我剛剛?cè)ゲ稍L緬甸戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)回來。

(5)(錢)夠支付(……的費(fèi)用)。如:

The award should be enough to cover her tuition fees. 獎(jiǎng)金應(yīng)該夠付她的學(xué)費(fèi)了。

7. appreciate vt.

(1)感激。如:

I appreciate your concern, but honestly, Im fine. 感謝您的關(guān)心,但說實(shí)話,我真的沒事。

(2)欣賞;賞識(shí);鑒賞。如:

Her abilities are not fully appreciated by her employer. 她的才能沒有完全得到老板的賞識(shí)。

8. admit (admitted, admitted, admitting) vt.

(1)(不情愿的)承認(rèn);贊同;承認(rèn)(做錯(cuò)了事或犯了罪)。常用于admit (that…), admit to sb (that…), admit (to) doing something等結(jié)構(gòu)。如:

You may not like her, but you have to admit that shes good at her job.你可以不喜歡她,但你不得不承認(rèn)她工作干得很好。

A quarter of all workers admit to taking time off when they are not ill.四分之一的工人都承認(rèn)沒生病的時(shí)候請(qǐng)過假。

(2)vt. 允許……進(jìn)入; 允許……加入,接納。常用于admit sb to/into something結(jié)構(gòu)。如:

Only ticket-holders will be admitted into the stadium.只有持票者才被允許進(jìn)入體育場(chǎng)。

Mike was admitted into the club in 1997.麥克1997年被接納加入俱樂部。

9. abandon vt.

(1)遺棄,拋棄(某人); 放棄(信念或原則)。如:

How could she abandon her own child? 她怎么會(huì)拋棄自己的孩子呢?

Rescuers had abandoned all hope of finding any more survivors.救援者不再期望找到更多幸存者。

(2)(因問題多或繼續(xù)不下去而)放棄,中止(做某事)。如:

The game had to be abandoned due to bad weather. 比賽由于天氣也因不得不中止。

[比較] desert vt.

(1)遺棄,拋棄,離棄(某人)(=abandon)。如:

He deserted his wife and family for another woman.為了另一個(gè)女人,他拋棄了妻子和家人。

(2)舍棄,離開(某地使之變空)(以后也許會(huì)再回來)。如:

The birds have deserted their nest. 鳥離開了巢。

10. frighten vt.

(1)使害怕,使驚嚇。常用于frighten somebody to death,frighten the life out of somebody (=make someone feel extremely afraid) 等結(jié)構(gòu)。如:

He drove at a speed which frightened Lara to death.他開車的速度把勞拉嚇壞了。

(2)frighten somebody into / out of (doing) something恐嚇某人做/不做某事。如:

He frightened me into staying silent. 他嚇唬我,讓我別出聲。

frightened adj. 害怕的,受驚的。如:

I was frightened of being left by myself in the house.我害怕獨(dú)自一人留在房子里。

frightening adj. 可怕的,嚇人的。常用于it is frightening (to do something)結(jié)構(gòu)。如:

Going into hospital can be very frightening for a child.對(duì)小孩子來說,去醫(yī)院很可怕。
