The seventh and final season of the American cop drama The Shield came to a close last month, making this a great time to rewatch the whole thing for fans and newcomers alike. The show, which has been widely acclaimed for its pacing, acting, and hard-hitting drama, focuses around the character of Vic Mackey, played by Michael Chiklis. Chiklis' last police show was The Commish, about a loveable small town policeman with a happy family; this couldn't be more of a contrast. The bald, squat, powerful Mackey is a darkly charismatic LA cop who runs his own special unit, the Strike Team, focusing on controlling the local gangs.

The Strike Team are based on the real-life CRASH (Community Resources Against Street Hoodlums) scandal in Los Angeles, where a team of anti-gang policemen effectively became a street gang themselves, stealing drug profits and killing rival criminals. As well as busting criminals through unorthodox, often illegal methods, the Strike Team also skims money off the street for their own purposes, providing protection for drug dealers, which they justify as keeping things quiet. The show teases viewers with whether Vic is a villain or a hero - especially after he commits an unforgiveable sin in the very first episode of the show.

The show stemmed out of the climate of fear and insecurity in the USA following the events of September 11th, and focuses on one simple question; how far is it ok to go for security? Vic murders, tortures, steals, and lies, all ostensibly to keep his neighbourhood safe. He makes for thrilling watching, as do the other members of his Strike Team：the likeable Lem (Kenny Johnson), scummy redneck Shane (Walton Goggins), and quietly competent Ronnie (David Ree Snell).

At first, The Shield had more elements of conventional cop drama in it, skipping between the Strike Team and other members of "The Barn", their local police headquarters. Each show often featured three plotlines, one tied around the Strike Team, another around a detective case run by the insecure Dutch (played brilliantly by Jay Kames) and his tough partner Claudette (CCH Pounder), and a final one showing ordinary "street-level" police work, conducted by closeted gay cop Julian (Michael Jace) and his female partnet "Danny" (Catherine Dent). Over time, however, the show increasingly came to focus just on Vic and the rest of the strike team, with the others as supporting players in a Shakespearian drama of blood and intrigue. A great show, and one worth catching up on if you missed it.
