這里,“clear”是一個(gè)動(dòng)詞,意思是“to free from a legal charge or imputation of guilt”。比如:
The verdict cleared the accused man.
The company gave him an opportunity to clear himself.
我們也可以用“acquit”這個(gè)詞來(lái)表示同樣的意思:to free or clear from a charge or accusation。
She not only wanted to be acquitted, but aslo she wanted to clear her name entirely.
So, “clear” carries a sense of “purity”, of washing away a stain on one's reputation. clear有“徹底洗刷掉污點(diǎn)” 的意思,acquit指的是司法行為。
