The year 2024 marks the 20th anniversaryof the establishment of the ConfuciusInstitute. Over the past two decades,numerous colleagues of the ConfuciusInstitute have united and supportedeach other in pursuit of their commonideals. The following five sections, titled“Dreams,” “Growth,” “Courage,” “Exchange,”and “Development,” document the lifeand development of five internationalChinese language teachers from BeijingForeign Studies University with ConfuciusInstitutes.

Dreams
陳晨,作為意大利羅馬大學孔子學院的一名中文教師,她與孔院的故事是一段跨越山海、連接文化、培育未來的旅程。守護夢想、筑夢未來是她任教13年里踐行的箴言。在羅馬國立住讀學??鬃诱n堂從事教學的10年中,陳晨帶領學生參加“漢語橋”中學生比賽,連續(xù)6年獲得意大利團體冠軍和個人冠軍,并獲得過全球總冠軍。2020年,她受意大利教育部邀請,設計并主講了意大利國家電視臺文教頻道推出的首個電視公益中文課程,讓中文教學首次通過電視走進更多學生的視野。節(jié)目播出后反響強烈,意大利教育部長專門致信表示感謝。同年3月,中國醫(yī)療專家隊馳援意大利。受意大利紅十字會邀請,陳晨為醫(yī)療隊擔任翻譯,并主持翻譯了意大利紅十字會與外交部主辦的新聞發(fā)布會。她的學生和朋友們紛紛表示,“學習中文,特別自豪,也讓我們更加珍惜與中國的友誼”。那一刻,她深刻感受到語言文化促進世界人民交流的力量。
Chen Chen, a Chinese language teacher at theConfucius Institute at the Sapienza University ofRome in Italy, has a history with the Institute whichconnects two cultures across long distance, shapingthe future. “Building dreams for the future” has beenher motto during her 13 years of teaching. In her tenyearteaching at the Confucius Classroom at the NationalBoarding School of Rome, she has encouragedher students to participate in the “Chinese Bridge”competition for secondary school students, winningthe team championship and individual championshipin Italy for six consecutive years, along wit7e1ccf00aa6ac4e16a7b7b0111e60b3d68370ad79f751d1f6e638893498f46c9h the globalchampionship. In 2020, at the invitation of the ItalianMinistry of Education, Chen Chen designed andhosted the first public Chinese language course onItaly’s national educational television channel, bringingChinese to the attention of many Italian students. Theresponse to the program was so overwhelming thatthe Italian Minister of Education subsequently senther a special letter of thanks. In March 2020, Chinesemedical experts travelled to support Italy during theCOVID-19 pandemic outbreak. At the invitationof the Italian Red Cross, Chen Chen served as aninterpreter for the medical team and as moderaterat the press conference organized by the Italian RedCross and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Her Italianstudents and friends voiced their pride in learningChinese and their deep appreciation for their friendshipwith China. At that moment, she felt the power oflanguage and culture in promoting exchanges betweenpeople around the world.

孫曉宇,同樣曾在意大利羅馬大學孔子學院任教。2013年,她考取了北京外國語大學孔子學院專職教師崗位,次年便帶著懵懂和憧憬赴外任教。到崗之后,孫曉宇被分派在羅馬國立住讀學??鬃诱n堂,擔任高中一、二年級的中文教師。初來乍到,當她為一位酷愛中文的學生取“鄭彥柯”這個中文名字時,不會想到他會問鼎“漢語橋”世界中學生中文比賽全球總冠軍;當她為高中生們“過于活躍”的課堂氣氛生氣、偷偷流下眼淚時,她不會想到這些學生日后會致信習近平主席,分享學習中文的經歷,并收到習近平主席的回信;當她翻閱文獻、苦苦思索如何為中文零基礎的學生上好地理課時,不會想到這將帶她踏上“內容與語言融合教學”博士研究之路。她在學生身上傾注了專業(yè)、情感與愛心,通過語言教學,把友誼的種子根植在學生心中,為學生提供了一段與中文、與中國有關的逐夢旅程。離任回國時,孫曉宇和學生們在大巴車上告別,抱頭痛哭的場景印在了在場每個人的心中。在那一刻,沒有國界。她深刻體會到了中外人文交流的真正意義,也更加堅定了未來要走的路。
Sun Xiaoyu also taught at the ConfuciusInstitute at the Sapienza University of Rome. In2013, she obtained a position as a full-time teacherat the Confucius Institute of Beijing Foreign StudiesUniversity and set off the following year, filled withexcitement and anticipation. On arrival, she wasassigned to teach Chinese to first-and second-yearhigh school students at the Confucius Classroom atthe National Boarding School of Rome. On arrival,she could not have imagined that the student shenamed “Zheng Yanke,” who had a deep love for theChinese language, would go on to win the global championship in the “Chinese Bridge” competitionfor secondary school students. Nor could she haveforeseen that the “overactive” classroom atmosphere,which once made her cry with frustration, wouldlead those students to write to Chinese President XiJinping, sharing their experiences of learning Chineseand receiving a reply from him! As s033f7b084f648393939a96f12e60240bhe pored overliterature, making her best efforts to teach geographyto students with no prior knowledge of Chinese, SunXiaoyu could not have anticipated that this challengewould set her on the path to doctoral research inContent and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL).She has invested her expertise, emotions, and love inher students, planting the seeds of friendship throughlanguage teaching and offering them a journey ofdreams connected to Chinese and China. When SunXiaoyu was about to return to China, the image ofher and her students tearfully embracing on the busleft a deep impression on everyone present. In thatmoment, their connections transcended borders;she realized the true meaning of cultural exchange,feeling more determined than ever about the pathshe wanted to pursue in the future.

荀佳月,曾任德國紐倫堡—埃爾蘭根孔子學院中文教師,她與孔子學院早在2006年便有了交集。當年,她考取了北京外國語大學漢語國際教育碩士研究生,18年漢語國際教育的經歷轉化為成長的養(yǎng)料,也為她書寫了直面挑戰(zhàn)、遇見勇氣的人生信條。2008年,在紐倫堡—埃爾蘭根孔子學院舉辦的“奧運論壇”活動上,荀佳月為北京奧組委宣傳部副部長徐達先生和紐倫堡前任市長、德國奧委會法蘭肯地區(qū)主席勛萊博士(Dr. Sch?nlein)參加的晚宴擔任翻譯。接到任務時,她因從未受過專業(yè)翻譯訓練而忐忑不安。孔子學院德方院長徐艷肯定地對她說:“佳月,我相信你!”于是,在有著上百年歷史的傳統(tǒng)德國餐廳里,兩位同樣有著歷史專業(yè)背景的官員在愉悅的氛圍中侃侃而談,他們時不時停下,望向佳月,等待著她的翻譯。荀佳月則是全身心投入,通過自己的努力,讓雙方的思想碰撞出火花。晚宴在賓主盡歡的氣氛中結束,她為自己能夠承擔晚宴的翻譯工作而慶幸,也為自己能夠參與孔院的工作而自豪。讓國與國之間文明互鑒,讓不同文化背景下的人彼此真誠交流正是她投身這份事業(yè)的初衷。
Xun Jiayue, a Chinese language teacher at theConfucius Institute at Nuremberg-Erlangen inGermany, began her journey with the Institute asearly as 2006. That year, she was admitted to theMaster’s program in International Chinese Educationat Beijing Foreign Studies University. Her 18 years ofexperience in international Chinese education havebecome the source of her growth, shaping her lifemotto of “facing challenges and discovering courage.”In 2008, during the “Olympic Forum” hosted bythe Confucius Institute at Nuremberg-Erlangen,Xun Jiayue was tasked with interpreting for Mr XuDa, Deputy Director of the Publicity Departmentof the Beijing Organizing Committee for theOlympic Games, and Dr Sch?nlein, former Mayor ofNuremberg and Chairman of the FranconianRegion of the German Olympic Committee. Onreceiving this assignment, she felt anxious becauseshe had never received any professional training ininterpreting, although Xu Yan, German Director ofthe Institute, reassured her, saying: “Jiayue, I believein you!” In the German restaurant the two officials,both with backgrounds in history, engaged in livelydiscussion; they paused at times, looking towardsJiayue for her interpretation. Fully committed, Jiayueworked hard to12d445795535e8fc5bd9b187935976fa facilitate a fruitful exchange of ideas.The dinner concluded in a joyful atmosphere, and shefelt fortunate to have successfully handled the taskof interpreting, and felt proud to be part of the workof the Confucius Institute. The promotion of mutualunderstanding between nations and the fostering ofgenuine exchanges among people of different cultural backgrounds is exactly why she embarked on thiscareer.

趙婉貞,從一名國際中文教育志愿者到國際中文教師,再到孔子學院中方院長,她已在馬來亞大學孔子學院奮斗了11年。她認為在馬來亞大學孔院學到的重要一課是因緣相聚、攜手共進。她見證了孔院教學場地的變遷,結識了大批熱愛中國語言和文化的學生。在跨文化交際和工作中,她對國際中文教育、中馬文化的交流與合作有了更深刻的認識。2023年春節(jié)前夕,馬來西亞國家電視臺TV3頻道的《今日馬來西亞》節(jié)目組希望找一位能說馬來語的中國人,以便介紹馬來西亞人農歷新年吃柑橘的習俗。趙婉貞懷著忐忑的心情走進了馬來西亞的電視節(jié)目,與主持人暢聊“春節(jié)吃柑橘”和“年年有余”的當?shù)貍鹘y(tǒng)習俗。不少學過中文的學生看完電視節(jié)目后紛紛發(fā)來照片和信息,他們說:“我在電視上看到老師啦,真為老師感到驕傲!我還把節(jié)目轉發(fā)給了親戚朋友,告訴他們這就是我的中文老師。”2024年春節(jié)前夕,趙婉貞再次接到同一電視節(jié)目的邀約,兩位馬來主持人詼諧幽默的風格和對中華文化中“龍”的濃厚興趣,讓這次采訪成為她難忘的經歷。她相信文化的雙向交流定將助力孔子學院下一個20 年的發(fā)展。
Zhao Wanzhen has dedicated 11 years to theConfucius Institute at the University of Malaya,evolving from a volunteer to an international Chineselanguage teacher, and eventually becoming ChineseDirector of the Institute. She believes that the mostimportant lesson she has learned at the Institute is the value of coming together through serendipityand working hand in hand. Over the years, shehas witnessed the improvement of the Institute’steaching facilities, meeting many students who arepassionate about the Chinese language and culture.Her experience in cross-cultural communicationand collaboration has deepened her understandingof international Chinese education and the culturalexchange between China and Malaysia. In early 2023,the production team of Malaysia Today on Malaysia’snational television channel TV3, was looking for aChinese guest who could speak Malay to demonstratethe tradition of eating oranges during theLunar New Year in Malaysia. Zhao Wanzhen, feelingboth excited and nervous, took part in the televisionprogram, where she had an engaging conversationwith the host about local customs such as eatingoranges during the Spring Festival and the traditionof niannian-youyu (meaning “eating fish as a way towish for good fortune in the coming year”). After theairing of the program, many of her former studentssent her messages, saying: “I saw you on TV, and I’mso proud of you! I forwarded the video to my relativesand friends, telling them that this is my Chineseteacher.” In early 2024, she was invited back to thesame television show. The humorous style of the twoMalay hosts, and their keen interest in the Chinesecultural symbol of the dragon, made this interviewan unforgettable experience for her. Zhao Wanzhenfirmly believes that mutual cultural exchange willsupport the development of the Confucius Instituteduring its next 20 years and beyond.

張翠翠,作為阿聯(lián)酋扎耶德大學孔子學院的中方院長,她對阿聯(lián)酋中文教育深有體會。2019年,阿聯(lián)酋將中文正式納入國民教育體系,成為第一個將中文納入國民教育體系的阿拉伯國家。張翠翠真切感受到了順勢而為、借勢而進的發(fā)展趨勢。多年來,該孔院秉承聚焦語言教學主業(yè),提升中文教學質量,推廣中國語言和文化,促進中阿在教育、文化領域的交流與合作,積極推動國際中文教育事業(yè)在阿拉伯國家的高質量發(fā)展。張翠翠上任以來,積極拓展扎耶德大學孔院與阿聯(lián)酋本土國際中文教育各方力量,積極動員“百校項目”的學生參加“漢語橋”比賽。同時,她與“百校項目”負責人法蒂瑪 · 巴斯塔基(Fatma Bastaki)女士探索以學促用、學用結合、知行合一的發(fā)展路徑,成功舉辦了首場中小學生中文考試。此外,她還組織“百校項目”本土中文教師參加師資培訓,逐步形成教學、文化、考試、師資四位一體的新合作模式。今年正值中阿建交40周年,習近平主席復信“百校項目”學生代表,勉勵他們學好中文、了解中國,為促進中阿友好貢獻力量。作為在阿聯(lián)酋從事國際中文教育的親歷者,張翠翠備受鼓舞。學習中文在阿聯(lián)酋已經成為一種新風尚。
Zhang Cuicui, Chinese Director of the ConfuciusInstitute at Zayed University in the United ArabEmirates (UAE), has a deep insight into Chineselanguage education in the country. In 2019, the UAEbecame the first Arab nation to officially incorporateChinese into its national education system; ZhangCuicui has since keenly realised the importance oftaking opportunities and following the developmenttrend. Over the years, the Confucius Institute atZayed University has focused on enhancing thequality of Chinese language teaching, promotingthe Chinese language and culture, and facilitatingeducational and cultural exchanges and cooperationbetween China and the Arab world, which hassignificantly contributed to the high-qualitydevelopment of international Chinese education inArab countries. Since taking office, Zhang Cuicuihas worked diligently to expand partnershipsbetween the Institute and various stakeholders ininternational Chinese education within the UAE. Shehas encouraged students of the “Hundred SchoolsProject” to participate in the “Chinese Bridge”competition; working in collaboration with FatmaBastaki, Head of the “Hundred Schools Project,” she has explored pathways which integrate learning andpractice, leading to the successful organization of thefirst Chinese language examination for primary andsecondary students. Additionally, Zhang Cuicui hasorganized training for local Chinese language projectinstructors, gradually establishing a new cooperativemodel which integrates classroom teaching, culturallearning, assessment, and teacher training. This yearmarks the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relationsbetween China and the UAE. President Xi Jinpinghas responded to the student representatives of the“Hundred Schools Project,” encouraging them tolearn the Chinese language, understand the countryof China, and to contribute to the friendship betweenChina and the UAE. As a witness to the developmentof international Chinese education in the UAE,Zhang Cuicui feels strongly inspired; today, learningChinese has already become a trend in the UAE.

“The mighty river flows day and night, and thesong of passion never ends.” Over the past 20 years ofgrowth and development, the Confucius Institute hasremained true to its original aspiration of promotingChinese language education worldwide, dedicated tofostering friendly exchanges and mutual understandingbetween the peoples of China and the world. Thestories of these five international Chinese educationteachers from Beijing Foreign Studies University,which center around dreams, growth, courage,exchange, and development, vividly depict China’sopenness, inclusiveness, and the Chinese people’slove of peace. These educators have pursued theirdreams with youthful vigor, growing alongside theConfucius Institute, and contributing to the cause ofinternational Chinese education.
