Every year from March to October, Christian Moullec, also known as “Birdman”, takes hisadapted light aircraft to the sky. However, the Frenchman’s daily 30-minute flight is not just to enjoythe impressive views, but to guide flocks (鳥群) of lesser white-fronted geese through securemigration paths which the birds can teach future generations.

In addition to the trained birds flying alongside them, visitors, who come from as far as a15-hour plane flight away, are treated to a variety of crane and goose species as well as breathtakingviews of castles and cities.

He often brings his camera along for the flights, capturing photos not just for their beauty, but forwhat they describe. Moullec believes the use of agricultural chemicals has done harm to wildEuropean birds, with more than a third disappearing in the last 30 years. “It’s a disaster,” he said. “Mybeautiful images with flying birds should be used to tell this story.”

Plants are boring. They just sit there photosynthesizing (光合作用) while animals have all thefun. Right? Not so much. A new study has found that there is a long history of interactions betweenants and plants. The ant and plant co-evolution started with ants feeding on plants and plantsevolving ant-friendly features.

Plants make a number of different structures that are specific for ant use. Some plants haveevolved features that persuade ants into defending them from attacks from other insects and evenmammals. These include hollow thorns (空心刺) that ants will live inside, or extra nectar (花蜜) onleaves for the ants to eat. Some ants will just take the nectar and run, but some will stick around andattack anything that tries to hurt the plant. Other plants get ants to help them move their seedsaround, by providing them with rich food packets attached to the seeds. The ant will pick up theseed and carry it away, eat the food packet, and leave the seed—often in a nutrient-rich area whereit’ll grow better, and since it’s farther away from its parent, it won’t have to compete for resources.

But scientists weren’t sure how the evolutionary relationship between ants and plants gotstarted. It was a chicken-and-egg question, whether things started with ants developing behaviors totake advantage of plants, or plants evolving structures to take advantage of ants.

The history of ants and plants evolving together goes back to the time of the dinosaurs, and it’snot easy to tell from fossils who fired the first shot. However, it is a question of little significance.Scientists say their study matters because it provides a look at how these widespread and complexinteractions evolved.
