Swimming in the water of Hawaii's Big Island is a fun experience. But it can be more exciting if there are dolphins swimming around and jumping out of the sea too.For many people, it would be a wonderful dream to swim with these lovely animals! However, this may not be good for dolphins. They may get hurt because of human interaction(互動(dòng)).

Dolphins are active and usually look for food at night. In the day, they like to rest in shallow bays. Many people think the dolphins are awake during the day as they swim. But when they sleep, they rest half of their brain and keep the other half awake to breathe, so they may be sleeping even when they're swimming in the water.

From 2010 to 2013,spinner dolphins(飛旋海豚)of Hawaii's Big Island were exposed to human activities more than 82 percent of the time, according to Julian Tyne, a re?searcher at Australia's Murdoch University.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says disturbing the animals in their near?shore habitat could force them to swim to less favourable places, put?ting them at risk of being attacked by sharks and other animals.

Besides, when people are around, dolphins become more active. Thus, they can't get enough sleep.“Disturbing their resting behaviors can actually affect their long?term health and the health of the dolphin population,”Ann Garrett of NOAA's National Marine Fisher?ies Service said.

As a result, the NOAA wants to make rules to help protect the dolphins. For example, the agency may ban swimming with the Hawaii spinner dolphins.Or they may stop people from swimming in shallow bays when the dolphins are resting.Tour operators must also be taught to watch for signs to know when the dolphins are in their resting state.

4.What can we know about dolphins according to the text?

A.They spend most of their time sleeping at night.

B.They usually look for food at night.

C.They breathe more while sleeping.

D.They hardly get hurt by human interaction.

5.What would dolphins do when they are disturbed in their near?shore habitat?

A.Swim to a crowded place.B.Move closer to sharks.

C.Become less active.D.Sleep longer.

6.Which activity is against the rules?

A.Swimming with the Hawaii spinner dolphins.

B.Swimming in bays where the dolphins live.

C.Making signs that show the dolphins'resting state.

D.Making signs that show where the dolphins are.

Researchers were interested in the rock iguanas (鬣蜥) on the Exuma Islands which are often fed grapes by tourists. They were curious about how this high?sugar food might have influenced the iguanas' health.Over the past two decades, the remote islands have seen a big increase in the number of tourists.Just 25 years ago, some of the islands had zero to 20 visitors a day.Now they receive more than 200 tourists each day.

The team collected 48 rock iguanas: 24 from islands that tourists don't visit and 24 from islands frequently visited by tourists. They collected blood samples and found the iguanas from the islands where tourists frequently fed them had the highest glucose (葡萄糖) level. The researchers said the possible health issues could affect the iguanas'long?term survival, which leads to health concerns.

“A visitor to these islands would never doubt that the iguanas were doing fine. They are big, active, and plentiful on islands visited by tourists. These phenomena are possibly concealing internal health problems that can cause a rapid decrease in population, so we need to watch the activity closely and find out ways to deal with these problems,”said Chuck Knapp,an author of the study.

“We also hope that the finding will lead to a scientific way that also protects people who depend on tourism. Many tour operators show the wildlife to visitors, and our research can be used to inform win?win strategies for wildlife and tour operators,”said Knapp.

“The rock iguanas face many threats to their existence, such as loss of habitat and cli?mate change. Many of these threats are very difficult to deal with, but controlling the influ?ence of human activities like feeding is a simple way we can help the species,”says Falon Cartwright, the director of science and policy at Bahamas National Trust.

8.What is mentioned about the rock iguanas on the Exuma Islands?

A.They are short of natural food at present.

B.They are dying out due to tourists'feeding.

C.They have more contact with humans nowadays.

D.They have a peaceful and free life in their living place.

9.What does the underlined word“concealing”in paragraph 3 mean?

A.Examining.B.Hiding.C.Showing.D.Preventing.

10.What's the meaning of the research finding according to Knapp?

A.It ensures the rapid development of local tourism.

B.It raises public awareness of cutting pollution.

C.It solves the health problems of most rock iguanas.

D.It helps perfect plans for protecting wildlife and tourism.

11.What does Falon Cartwright advise people to do?

A.Find a new home for the iguana species.

B.Offer more food choices to the rock iguanas.

C.Take measures to slow down climate change.

D.Change human behavior to reduce harm to wildlife.

A device floating in the water off the coast of southern Chile aims to collect data on nearby whales to protect them from passing ships.

The first electronic buoy (浮標(biāo)) was recently placed in the sea in the Gulf of Corco?vado. The device is designed to listen to the sounds whales make when they communicate with each other. The animals use sounds to map their movements and to hunt. The sounds are processed by artificial intelligence (AI)?powered computer systems in an effort to iden?tify where the animals are. This information is then sent to shipping operators to help them avoid crashing into whales.

A non?profit organization put the buoy in place. The group seeks to develop techno?logy tools to provide a warning system for shipping companies. In addition to helping pro?tect whales, the“smart”buoy also collects data on the health of the ocean and the effects of climate change. The Gulf of Corcovado is rich in sea life, including a large number of blue whales, as well as southern right whales, which are endangered now.The population of the area's whales is the largest during the summer season in the southern hemisphere.

“This is the beginning of a longer road,”said Sonia Espa?ol, director of the organiza?tion. She noted that her team planned to cover the gulf with at least six buoys. The buoy works by using software called Listening to the Deep Ocean Environment. The device con?tinuously monitors the ocean's sounds. It uses AI to identify the kind of whales and where they are in real time.It then sends messages to nearby ships, so they can alleviate noise levels and try to avoid crashes.

The buoys also contain sensors to measure water temperatures, oxygen levels and more to predict ocean health and the effects of climate change. That information is expected to be used to help guide public environmental policies.

12.What does paragraph 2 intend to tell us?

A.The necessity of protecting whales.

B.The important role of whales'sounds.

C.The unique way of whales'communication.

D.The working process of the electronic buoy.

13.What information can the buoys collect?

A.The health of whales.B.The change of sea life.

C.The condition of the ocean.D.The cause of climate change.

14.What does the underlined word“alleviate”in paragraph 4 mean?

A.Rid.B.Collect.C.Reduce.D.Recognize.

15.What is the purpose of the information collected by the buoys?

A.To guide public environmental policies.

B.To improve the ocean's oxygen levels.

C.To solve the problem of climate change.

D.To instruct passing ships to go smoothly.

My dad and Little Joe

Dad and Mom immigrated to Canada from Iceland, their families settling in Lundar and Gimli. After they met and married, they moved to Winnipeg where Dad started his boat?building business.Putting in nails was our job: As kids, we were small enough to get to the underside of the boat, and it saved Dad lots of time.

We had a dog, Little Joe, who was a brown, short?legged, sausage?shaped dog.Little Joe came to anyone who paid attention to him.We all loved him, as did the rest of the neighbourhood kids.Little Joe ran around the streets as though he were a noble, his little head held high, offering an innocent doggy smile to all he met—including vehicles. We tried to teach him the dangers of the road, and finally locked him in the yard. However, on one unforgettable day, Little Joe dug a hole under the fence and squeezed out to visit his friends.

Sometime later, a group of tearful neighbourhood children brought home the sad news that a truck had seriously injured Little Joe.He now lay down the road awaiting death by a policeman's bullet, the accepted method in those days of dealing with injured animals.

We ran to the scene of the accident, where a crowd had gathered around him.Though his eyes were open,he lay there, unable to move.Tears filled our eyes as Little Joe showed that he recognized us with a feeble wag of his tail.We stood around him, frustrated by our inability to respond to the appeal for help we read in his eyes. And we were terrified by the pistol of the approaching policeman. He motioned us away from the dog and drew his gun.

Suddenly we became aware of the noise. My father was elbowing his way through the circle of onlookers. He spoke with authority to the young policeman,“Put that thing away! You don't use a gun around children!”
