Jace Wiggins performed the first aid1 procedure—taught by his mom—on aclassmate at a class party of an elementary school in Baltimore, Maryland, US. Hesaved the classmates life by carrying out the Heimlich maneuver2 when shechoked3 on a water bottle cap.

Wiggins said the choking classmate had been “gasping4 for air”as she triedto ask for help. He used quick thinking as he carried out the Heimlich maneuveron the classmate—and added that it took three times before the cap was removed.

“When she was gasping for air and she was trying to get out what she wassaying, she was trying to say help but we couldnt understand it but I kind ofheard it,”Wiggins recalled.

Wiggins learned the life-saving move at age 7 fromhis mom Charlie Gilliam. She also taught her son how toperform CPR.
