How long should you study? The answer to this question is different foreveryone because its not just a matter of how long you study—its also howeffectively1 you study.
The best study sessions2 are at least one hour long. A one-hour block givesyou enough time to dive3 deep into the material, but it isnt so long that yourmind wanders4.
Take time off between one-hour or two-hour sessions. This is how your brainworks best. If you find yourself reading long chapters without stopping and thenremembering nearly nothing when you put the book away, consider the way above.
Some students cannot understand something right away as they read. Theirbrains need time for information to sink in5 and sort6 themselves out. As theyread, they should try to read in segments7, taking occasional8 breaks to relax.
Try not to panic9 if you dont understand something right away. Dont stressyourself out! Youll remember much more if you read calmly and then let yourbrain work after youve put the book away.
Some students love to get to the bottom of things. They often cant go onreading if they stumble10 upon information that doesnt make sense right away. Itkeeps them from getting through the reading in a reasonable amount of time.
Instead of re-reading sections over and over again, put a sticky-note or apencil mark on every page or section where you get stuck. Then, move on to thenext section—you can go back and look up words or solve the questions thesecond time around.
