Get the water flowing

If the person is still conscious, get him or her to drink water. If theres a bathtub? avail?able, fill it with cool water and put the person in it.

If your water supply is limited, you have to save it. Dampen a towel or a shirt and putit on the persons body. Focus on the face, neck, and chest.

Fan the person

Getting moving air over the person cools him or her down. Use anything, a towel or asheet, a shirt, your hands, or a piece of board. This is where having many people aroundreally helps, as they can combine to fan the entire body.

One in five adults in the US lives with a mental health problem according to the Na?tional Institute of Mental Health, but most dont look for professional help. Thats whereMental Health First Aid—an eight?hour workshop hopes to fill the gap. The class trainseveryday citizens how to recognize the signs of various mental illnesses and how to respondin different situations.

Karen VonDeylen, an instructor at the Maumee Valley Guidance Center, says thepopularity of the class exploded this year, with 20 workshops offered since last summer.

“Weve seen a lot of companies and organizations get excited about it.”“Whenever we notice an unexpected change in personal cleanliness, that could be areally good sign that somethings going on,”instructor BJ Horner told the class. For depres?sion, the physical signs include lack of energy, sleeping too little, and overeating or loss of appetite.

Class participants were shown how to calm someone going through a panic attack byhaving them focus on a particular color or sound. When someone is really struggling, thetrainers say asking if someone is thinking of harming themselves is actually a big lifesaver.Another key point is you shouldnt offer advice. You should listen non?judgmentally.

“I was so uninformed. I was one of those people who said,‘Get over it. Improve yoursituation yourself and carry on.When somebody says something—pay attention to whatthey are saying,”says class participant Peggy Oyer, who lost her brother 11 years ago.

A week after taking the class, HR manager Tina Bost met with an employee who hadmissed work. She remembers asking,“Do you think youre depressed?”He cried and said,“Sometimes I dont want to get out of bed. I guess maybe Im depressed.”Bost asked if hehad been thinking about harming himself—something, she says, she would never have?asked anybody in the past. His answer was yes. Bost says the employee is now getting treat?ment and taking medicine.“He is doing much better. Im glad I asked.”

Police dog handlers in Sussex are to receive free dog first?aid training to help save thelives of their injured four?legged partners. It comes as part of the first ever nationwide move?ment to provide free dog first?aid support to the UKs police forces. The goal is to offerBritains nearly 1,500 police dogs greater support in critical moments of need.

Animal Friends Insurance is leading a programme to bring together experts from DogFirst Aid Training, police dog charity the Thin Blue Paw Foundation, and police forces upand down the country. Chief Constable of Sussex Police, Jo Shiner, said,“I am pleased towork alongside the Thin Blue Paw Foundation. Police dogs are an integral (不可缺少的)part of our policing family, so it is important that they are protected as one of our own. As aproud owner of a lovely but mischievous (淘氣的) rescue dog myself, I look forward to partaking inthis dog first?aid course and sharing learning across Sussex.”

Police dog handlers attending the course will also be provided, free of charge, with atailor?made dog first?aid kit by the Thin Blue Paw Foundation, funded by a ?10,000 dona?tion from Animal Friends Insurance. The kits can be worn on uniforms and could play a vi?tal role in treating injuries suffered by the brave dogs.

Chief Constable of Surrey Police, Gavin Stephens, said,“These dog first?aid courses,open to all 47 of our handlers, will be a valuable addition to the training programme led bySurrey Police and Sussex Police Operational Dog Unit and Dog Training School. Weregrateful to Animal Friends Insurance, Dog First Aid Training and the Thin Blue Paw Foun?dation for giving our handlers this opportunity to continue developing their skills.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, every year EmergencyRooms across the country treat more than 200,000 children for playground?related acci?dents. About half of those accidents are severe.16Here are four steps:

Not spotting him anywhere, I went to the police station to report my fathers dis?appearance. The station house officer advised me to wait until midnight before filling the re?port. Since it was only 10 am, I drove back to the park, in the hope of discovering some?trace, but in vain. Totally at a loss for what to do next, I returned home and waitedimpatiently, walking back and forth in the house.
