Penguins,? polar bears? and? amazing? over-head photography can only mean one thing? thesecond season of BBCs documentary FrozenPlanet is finally here!
In this follow-up to 2011s Frozen Planet, the new six- part series called Frozen Planet IIrevisits the Arctic and Antarctic. It also gives aview? into the? secret wildlife? dramas that playout? in? all? the? worlds? coldest? areas,? such? ashigh mountains and frozen deserts.
It took the team over three years to makevideos? of? Siberian? tigers? in? Russia? walkingover great distances to hunt for black bears. InChinas Wolong National Nature Reserve, theteam brought to light giant pandas doing hand-stands to mark their scent.
While there are lighter moments, the ever-changing frozen planet is a central theme of thedocumentary. Mark Brownlow, the seriesexec-utive producer, points out that Frozen Planet IIis not just about capturing nice footage, but al-so “drawing? attention? to? changes? going? onnow”.
The? series? shows? the? great? challengescaused by climate change that many polar ani-mals now face. For example, pups of harp sealsin the Arctic Ocean rely on sea ice for the firstsix weeks of life. However, the sea ice of todaymelts and breaks up sooner in spring. As a re-sult, groups of seal pups fall off the ice into theocean before they have learned how to? swim.Meanwhile, chinstrap penguin chicks use their
fur to stay warm. Due to a warming Antarctica, however, more rainy days have led to them suffering from hypothermia.
Despite this, Frozen Planet II tells us thatthere is still hope. Professor Alun Hubbard is aglaciologist from Norway. He has spent over 30years studying the movement of ice alongGreenlands coastline. Although there has beenmuch more ice melting there over the last 20years, he believes that all these processes canstill be turned back. “Consume less...thinkmore sensibly about the journeys we take andthe food we eat. Figure out a lifestyle that issustainable,”he warns us.
