Its easy to find geeky characters in geeky movies. Here， then， is our list of the ten best characters who we think qualify as geeks， but who appear in movies aimed at （and popular with） the general public， not primarily at geeks.

10. The Geek from Sixteen Candles

The character is officially billed1 as “The Geek，” and he was played by Anthony Michael Hall， who at that point in his career was pretty much playing only geeks and nerds， and this was really his first such role. He gave some serious， if probably unrealistic， hope to geeks in the 80s， by ending up with the prom queen.

Mr. Anderson isnt necessarily what youd consider cool. In the early portion of the first Matrix film， hes clearly shown to be an antisocial hacker who doesnt have very much personality. But once hes discovered by Morpheus and he becomes Neo， he turns into one of the coolest characters in the history of movies.

I dont think this one needs much justification， seeing as how hes a hacker， and a great character. Im sure some might claim the movie isnt mainstream enough to belong on this list， but I remember when it came out， it was popular enough that most people who saw it didnt realize how preposterous most of the plot really was.

He even carves chess pieces and puts up a poster from One Million Years B.C.3 Its really his geekiness that saves him， since it gets him the job working for the warden， and probably the brains to come up with his plan in the first place.

Doc is an exaggerated geek， of course， as only Christopher Lloyd could play. He created a time machine out of a DeLorean8 and he talks about gigawatts all while being one of the most eccentric individuals to ever grace the silver screen. He mispronounces “gigawatt，” which geeks everywhere cringed9 at when the first movie came out. But his excitement about his inventions， his habit of naming his dogs after famous scientists， and the way he obsessively builds models in parts I and III， prove his geekiness even if no other evidence existed. He had to be on this list， especially since he ends up as a geek dad himself， even naming his sons “Jules” and “Verne.” 10

Most of the tech the Ghostbusters use is derived from Spenglers work， so hes clearly brilliant. Hes the one who warns the others not to cross the streams， setting up for the films climax when he， predictably， tells them that they need to cross them after all. And despite rising to nearly nerd-like levels of braininess， he even manages to attract Annie Pottss Janines attention.

Obviously hes a geek whos not afraid to get his hands dirty11. But hes a college professor and he donates everything he finds to a museum. The character has always been fascinated by history and keen on lifelong learning， especially when it comes to ancient civilizations and languages. The iconic venturer is smart and crafty， and such traits often stand out， making him the ultimate coolest adventure hero. Plus he has the great line， “Nothing shocks me—Im a scientist.”
