The Alchemist， a masterpiece by Paulo Coelho， gives anaccount of a shepherd boy named Santiago. The boy longs to adven-ture for treasure that the world offers. He travels to the Egyptian desert. The treasure is said to be buried near the Pyramids. The boy meets an old man who refers to himself as a king and alchemist. He points to the direction of the treasure. However， no one is certain about the existence of the treasure.

Santiago has a dream. In this dream， he is with the sheep in the fields when a child?appears. She promises to tell Santiago the location of the treasure. Santiago wakes up be-fore the child tells him the place. When he consults a Gypsy woman the meaning of the re-curring（重現(xiàn)的） dream， he is told that the treasure is waiting for him. So， he is sure that the treasure does definitely exist.

Courageously， Santiago sells the sheep he has to travel to Tangier（丹吉爾，摩洛哥北部城市）. Unfortunately， his money is stolen， and he has to take a job. The merchant that Santiago works for educates him on how to go for the journey successfully. After working for a year， Santiago earns enough money. He now wants to return home. When on the caravan（大篷車）， Santiago meets an Englishman with an intriguing（非常有趣的） personality. The Englishman inspires Santiago to look for the treasure. Santiago then falls in love with Fatima，a charming girl he meets in the desert. Love makes Santiago think Fatima is the treasure he has been looking for. The alchemist helps him locate the treasure. Later， he recalls the story of the Personal Legend and understands its importance at this point.

Moreover， he realizes why it is critical for one to search for his or her destiny. He gets what the old king means. The story gives an account of some of the things we have to do to locate the treasure in our lives. The main purpose of life can only be achieved if people are courageous， believe in their dreams and move toward their destinations despite the numerous challenges that they are likely to encounter.
