2005年5月，斯科特·羅威和四名合伙人（其中大部分曾效力于貝克集團(tuán)）在達(dá)拉斯成立了一家建筑公司——五人設(shè)計(jì)工作室。五名合伙人（即5G）一直尋求更多的設(shè)計(jì)自由。盡管他們已經(jīng)獲得了晉升和加薪，也規(guī)劃了收入豐厚的職業(yè)生涯，但是當(dāng)圣安東尼奧市的一家?？漆t(yī)院要求他們完成一個(gè)價(jià)值1000～1200萬(wàn)美元的項(xiàng)目時(shí)，這些年輕人看到了自己的機(jī)會(huì)?！拔覀儾粦?yīng)該離職，”羅威表示，“但我們確實(shí)離職了?！?/p>

一個(gè)月之后，羅威坐在辦公室外的地上接了一個(gè)電話，通知他得克薩斯州已經(jīng)暫停開(kāi)設(shè)該所?？漆t(yī)院。他們的項(xiàng)目被擱置——而且可能被無(wú)限期擱置。羅威想道：“我該怎么告訴我的四個(gè)合伙人？我們剛剛辭職，而這個(gè)項(xiàng)目又黃了？”他走進(jìn)辦公室，并宣布了項(xiàng)目擱置的消息?！翱只胖?，我們團(tuán)結(jié)一致并且堅(jiān)信“我們能夠渡過(guò)難關(guān)”。

45天之后，暫停令解除，公司得以繼續(xù)設(shè)計(jì)醫(yī)院。這一個(gè)半月是一個(gè)漫長(zhǎng)的等待，大家都用光了自己的積蓄和401（k）（企業(yè)年金）。

七年之后，公司不僅活了下來(lái)，而且發(fā)展得很好。公司設(shè)計(jì)的項(xiàng)目包括市中心的DRG Concept餐廳（Wild Salsa、Dallas Chop House、Dallas Fish Market、Chop House Burger）、Omni達(dá)拉斯會(huì)議中心酒店以及最近竣工的達(dá)拉斯南區(qū)NYLO酒店。并收購(gòu)了另外一家公司，目前設(shè)有兩個(gè)國(guó)際辦事處，其中一處位于亞特蘭大。公司處于盈利狀態(tài)。

目前公司共有30名員工，但是“5G”還剩4名合伙人，其中2名創(chuàng)始合伙人中途退出，隨后又加入一名新的合伙人。羅威表示，在他任職期間，他學(xué)到的一些最重要的經(jīng)驗(yàn)來(lái)自早期。他還說(shuō)：“你不是靠自己一個(gè)人的能力取得成功，而是依靠那些自己遇到的、渴望見(jiàn)證自己成功的人?！?/p>

一開(kāi)始，我們拜訪了許多公司，其中包括西南馬修斯公司（Matthews Southwest）的雅克·馬修斯（Jack Matthews）。

西南馬修斯公司是達(dá)拉斯的一家開(kāi)發(fā)商，因其對(duì)達(dá)拉斯南區(qū)的振興貢獻(xiàn)而在當(dāng)?shù)匦∮忻麣?。馬修斯表示，他非常能夠理解5G的創(chuàng)業(yè)故事。在職業(yè)生涯的早期，他曾贏得一機(jī)場(chǎng)私營(yíng)化項(xiàng)目招標(biāo)，但是該項(xiàng)目由于政府調(diào)整而被迫取消。

之后，馬修斯為達(dá)拉斯南區(qū)的Omni項(xiàng)目和NYLO項(xiàng)目選擇了這家建筑公司（5G）。而且他表示非常欣賞羅威和5G的自強(qiáng)不息精神。他說(shuō)：“如果你能擁有一群不自負(fù)卻聰明的團(tuán)隊(duì)成員，你就能完成很多事情?！?/p>

In May of 2005,five friends,most of whom formerly worked for The Beck Group,launched the Dallas-based architecture firm 5G Studio Collaborative.The five guys (thus,5G) had been seeking more design freedom.So,although they had received promotions and raises and had lucrative careers mapped out,the young men saw their opportunity when a specialty hospital in San Antonio asked them to do a $10 million to $12 million project.“It made no sense for us to leave,” one of the co-founder Lowe says.“But we did.”

A month later,Lowe was sitting on the floor outside his office.He had just taken a call informing him that the State of Texas had placed a moratorium on specialty hospitals.Their job was put on hold—possibly indefinitely.Lowe thought,“Man,how in the world am I going to tell my four partners that we just left our jobs,and this job died?” He walked in and broke the news.“After we all panicked,we got ourselves together and said,‘We can do this.’ ”

The moratorium was lifted 45 days later,and the firm was able to design the hospital.But it was a long month-and-a-half,in which the partners worked their way through their savings and their 401(k)s.

Seventeen years later,the group is not only surviving,but thriving.It has designed Virgin Hotels Dallas,AC Hotel Dallas by Galeria and Omni Dallas Hotel,Legacy ER at Allen,and Forty Five Ten at Hudson Yards.It has acquired another firm,and now has two international offices and one in Atlanta.And the company’s in the black.

The firm now has more than 70 employees,but the “5Gs” are now four,with two of the original partners leaving and a new one joining.Lowe says some of the most important lessons he learned during his tenure came early on.“You succeed not on your own merits,but you succeed on the people that you come across who desire and want to see you do well,” he says.

In the beginning,the group knocked on a lot of doors.One of those doors belonged to Jack Matthews of Matthews Southwest,a Dallas developer known locally for his revitalization efforts on the south side of Dallas.Matthews says he understands 5G’s story well.Early in his career,he won a bid to privatize an airport,but that project got canceled because of changes made by the government.

Matthews tapped the architecture firm for his Omni and NYLO Dallas Southside projects.He says he admires Lowe’s and 5G’s non-egotistical approach.“If you can have a smart group of people with low egos,” he says,“you can get a lot done.”(D Magazine,November 2012)
