October, 2021 Rare liver diseases: Improving diagnosis and care October 22-23, 2021; Hamburg, Germany

The School for Rare Liver Diseases aims at improving clinical knowledge for both pediatric and adult hepatologists, addressing issues of transitional care, in particular, such as when pediatric liver transplant recipients become adults. Learning objectives include: 1) to describe the diagnostic trajectory of patients with autoimmune liver disease; 2) to highlight the issues that are relevant for the care of liver transplanted patients with rare liver diseases; 3) to summarize the differential diagnosis of neonatal cholestasis: disease spectrum, impact of established and novel therapies and relevance for the adult hepatologist; 4) to describe the therapeutic possibilities for polycystic liver disease; and 5) to explain the pathology and consequences of alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency. Progress, pitfalls, and challenges in the management of portal hypertension November 19-20, 2021; Barcelona, Spain

The field of portal hypertension (PHT) faces many current challenges, regarding the variations in the etiology of cirrhosis. It also changes in the natural history of advanced chronic liver disease, once the etiological factors have been checked (i.e. patients’ sustained viro-logical response after receiving antiviral treatment for HCV). Topics include: 1) epidemiology and etiology of portal hypertension: Is there a world beyond cirrhosis? 2) HVPG measurement: How and when? 3) Non-invasive evaluation of portal hypertension: Does it help? 4) Update on the pharmacological and endoscopic management of portal hypertension; 5) Novel endovascular techniques: Always the last step? And 6) Precision medicine in portal hypertension: Are we there yet? With the proposed program and activities, the Barcelona Clinical School on portal hypertension will provide the following outcomes, adjusted to different needs: 1) PHT is not solely due to liver cirrhosis; 2) Etiological treatments change the natural history of advanced chronic liver disease; 3) The importance of an accurate diagnosis of the underlying disease; 4) The role of traditional diagnostic methods in the current era; 5) Better knowledge of the new therapeutic armamentarium available; 6) Evidence-based and individualised treatment of PHT; and 7) Knowing how to interpret and criticise the methodology used in clinical studies.
