Throughout the ages different ideas have been expressed about the working of the human brain. It is only recently, however, that science has begun to give us some idea of how the brain really works.
In ancient times men did not think that the brain was the centre of mental activity.Aristotle, the philosopher of ancient Greece, thought that the mind was based in the heart. It was not until the 18th century that men realized that the whole of the brain was involved in the workings of the mind.
During the 19th century scientists found that when certain parts of the brain were damaged men lost the ability to do certain things. And so,people thought that each part of the brain controlled a different activity. But modern research has found that this is not so.It is not easy to say exactly what each part of the brain does.
In the past 50 years there has been a great increase in the amount of research being done on the brain.Chemists and biologists have found that the way the brain works is far more complicated than they had thought. In fact, the more scientists find out,the more questions they are unable to answer. For instance, mathematicians who have tried to use computers to copy the way the brain works have found that even using the latest electronic equipment they would have to build a computer which weighed over 10,000 kilos.
Scientists hope that if we can discover how the brain works, the better use we will be able to put it to.For example, how do we learn language? Some children learn to speak and read and write when they are very young compared to average children. But scientists are not sure why this happens.
Earlier scientists thought that during a man’s lifetime the power of his brain decreased. But it is now thought that this is not so.An old person who has always been mentally active has a quicker mind than a young person who has done only physical work.It means that the more work we give our brains, the more work they are able to do.
Other people now believe that we use only 1% of our brains’ full potential. They say that the only limit on the power of the brain is the limit of what we think is possible. This is probably because of the way we are taught as children. When we first start learning to use our minds we are told what to do,for example,to remember certain facts, but we are not taught how our memory works and how to make best use of it.We are told to make notes but we are not taught how our brains accept information and which is the best way to organize the information we want our brains to accept.
This century man has made many discoveries about the universe—the world outside himself. But he has also started to look into the workings of that other universe which is inside himself.(選自《大學(xué)英語精讀》Unit 9)

Zachariah Fike has an unusual hobby. He finds old military(軍隊(duì)的) medals for sale in antique stores and on the Internet. But unlike most collectors,Zac tracks down the medals’ rightful owners, and returns them.
His effort to reunite families with lost medals began with a Christmas gift from his mother,a Purple Heart with the name Corrado A.G.Piccoli,found in an antique shop.Zac knows the meaning of a Purple Heart—he earned one himself in a war as a soldier. So when his mother gave him the medal,he knew right away what he had to do.
Through the Internet,Zac tracked down Corrado’s sister Adeline Rockko. But when he finally reached her,the woman flooded him with questions: “Who are you? What antique shop?”However, when she hung up,she regretted the way she had handled the call.So she called Zac back and apologized.Soon she drove to meet Zac in Watertown,N.Y.“At that point,I knew she meant business,” Zac says.“To drive eight hours to come to see me.”
The Piccolis grew up the children of Italian immigrants in Watertown.Corrado,a translator for the Army during WWII,was killed in action in Europe.
Before hearing from Zac,Adeline hadn’t realized the medal was missing.Like many military medals, the one Zac’s mother had found was a family treasure.“This medal was very precious to my parents.Only on special occasions(場合) would they take it out and let us hold it in our hands,”Adeline says.
As a child,Adeline couldn’t understand why the medal was so significant.“But as I grew older,” Adeline says,“and missed my brother more and more,I realized that was the only thing we had left.” Corrado Piccoli’s Purple Heart medal now hangs at the Italian American Civic Association in Watertown.
Zac recently returned another lost medal to a family in Alabama.Since he first reunited Corrado’s medal,Zac says his record is now 5 for 5.(2019浙江卷)

I must have always known reading was very important because the first memories I have as a child deal with books. There was not one night that I don’t remember Mom reading me a storybook by my bedside.I was extremely inspired by the elegant way the words sounded.
I always wanted to know what my mom was reading.Hearing Mom say,“I can’t believe what’s printed in the newspaper this morning,” made me want to grab it out of her hands and read it myself.I wanted to be like my mom and know all of the things she knew.So I carried around a book, and each night, just to be like her,I would pretend to be reading.
This is how everyone learned to read.We would start off with sentences, then paragraphs, and then stories. It seemed an unending journey, but even as a six-year-old girl I realized that knowing how to read could open many doors. When Mom said,“The C-A-N-D-Y is hidden on the top shelf,” I knew where the candy was.My progress in reading raised my curiosity, and I wanted to know everything.I often found myself telling my mom to drive more slowly,so that I could read all of the road signs we passed.
Most of my reading through primary, middle and high school was factual reading.I read for knowledge, and to make A’s on my tests.Occasionally,I would read a novel that was assigned, but I didn’t enjoy this type of reading.I liked facts, things that are concrete.I thought anything abstract left too much room for argument.
Yet,now that I’m growing and the world I once knew as being so simple is becoming more complex,I find myself needing a way to escape.By opening a novel,I can leave behind my burdens and enter into a wonderful and mysterious world where I am now a new character. In these worlds I can become anyone.I don’t have to write down what happened or what technique the author was using when he or she wrote this.I just read to relax.
We’re taught to read because it’s necessary for much of human understanding.Reading is a vital part of my life.Reading satisfies my desire to keep learning. And I’ve found that the possibilities that lie within books are limitless.(2019天津卷)

“One of the reasons I find this topic very interesting is because my mom was a smoker when I was younger,” say Lindson-Hawly,who studies tobacco and health at the University of Oxford.
By studying about 700 adult smokers, she found out that her mom quit the right way—by stoppingabruptlyand completely.
In her study, participants were randomly assigned to two groups. One had to quit abruptly on a given day, going from about a pack a day to zero. The other cut down gradually over the course of two weeks.People in both groups used nicotine patches(貼片) before they quit,in addition to a second form of nicotine replacement, like gum or spray. They also had talk therapy with a nurse before and after quit day.
Six months out, more people who had quit abruptly had stuck with it—more than one-fifth of them, compared to about one-seventh in the other group.Although these numbers appear low,it is much higher than if people try without support.
And the quit rates were particularly convincing given that before the study started, most of the people had said they’d rather cut down gradually before quitting.“If you’re training for a marathon, you wouldn’t expect to turn up and just be able to run it.And I think people see that for smoking as well. They think,‘Well,if I gradually reduce,it’s like practice.’” says Lindson-Hawley.But that wasn’t the case.Instead of giving people practice, the gradual reduction likely gave them cravings(癮) and withdrawal symptoms before they even reached quit day, which could be why fewer people in that group actually made it to that point.“Regardless of your stated preference,if you’re ready to quit, quitting abruptly is more effective,” says Dr.Gabrieia Ferreira,“When you can quote a specific number like a fifth of the patients were able to quit, that’s compelling. It gives them the encouragement,I think,to really go for it,” Ferreira says.
People rarely manage to quit the first time they try.But at least, she says, they can maximize the odds of success.(2017大學(xué)英語四級考試)
