On my first day of high school, I asked an eleventh grader where my class was. And he told me it was “on the fourth floor, next to the pool”. I found out five minutes later that we dont even have a fourth floor and theres no pool either! Besides that, I didnt have any trouble with the older kid.

I think the biggest difference between middle and high school is the homework load (工作量) and size of the school. I went from maybe fifteen minutes of homework a night to several hours, so I had to learn how to make full use of time! Our class size is around 50, but joining in clubs, sports, music, and other activities at school makes it easier to get to know people in every grade.

The best advice I can give about the years you spend in high school is to learn things for yourself, not just to get a good grade. There have been so many tests that Ive prepared for the night before, gotten an A, and not remembered anything later. Ive changed that this year, and I enjoy school so much more. Dont take easy classes just to have a simple year. If you have a choice between chemistry and sports, the first will prove (證明) to be a lot more useful!

While drinking and smoking might be present in some middle schools, theyre also around in high school. I have a lot of friends who promised theyd never drink or smoke, but are now partying every weekend. If you spend your nights wasted instead of studying, you will regret it when youre applying (申請(qǐng)) for college. Its hard to see your closest friends grow apart and go in different directions, but dont follow their footsteps. Create your own path in life and make your own decisions.

24. What happened to the author on the first day of high school?

A. He had a fight with an eleventh grader.

B. He fell into a pool on the fourth floor.

C. He was five minutes late for class.

D. He was fooled by a schoolboy.

25. What does the author think of high school?

A. It requires hard work.

B. There are very few activities.

C. It is hard to meet new people there.

D. There isnt enough time for homework.

26. What does the author advise high school students to do?

A. Choose useful classes.

B. Spend some time playing sports.

C. Try their best to get good grades.

D. Get ready for tests the night before.

27. The last paragraph mainly tells us ___ .

A. not to lose ourselves in high school

B. not to go to parties often in high school

C. about the importance of making friends

D. about the trouble caused by drinking and smoking

C

Honey from the African forest is not only a kind of natural sugar, it is also delicious. Most people, and many animals, like eating it. However, the only way for them to get that honey is to find a wild bees nest and take the honey from it. Often, these nests are high up in trees, and it is difficult to find them. In parts of Africa, though, people and animals looking for honey have a strange and unexpected helper—a little bird called a honey guide.

The honey guide does not actually like honey, but it does like the wax (蜂蠟) in the beehives. The little bird cannot reach this wax, which is deep inside the bees nest. So, when it finds a suitable nest, it looks for someone to help it. The honey guide gives a loud cry that attracts the attention of both passing animals and people. Once it has their attention, it flies through the forest, waiting from time to time for the curious animal or person as it leads them to the nest. When they finally arrive at the nest, the follower reaches in to get at the delicious honey as the bird patiently waits and watches. Some of the honey, and the wax, always fall to the ground, and this is when the honey guide takes its share.

Scientists do not know why the honey guide likes eating the wax, but it is very determined (堅(jiān)定的) in its efforts to get it. The birds seem to be able to smell wax from a long distance away. They will quickly arrive whenever a beekeeper is taking honey from his beehives, and will even enter churches when beeswax candles are being lit.

28.Why does the author say it is difficult to find a wild bees nest?

A. Its small in size. B. Its hidden in trees.

C. Its covered with wax. D. Its hard to recognize.

29. What do the underlined words “the follower” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A. The bee. B. The bird.

C. The honey seeker. D. The beekeeper.

30. The honey guide is special in the way ___ .

A. it gets its food B. it goes to church

C. it sings in the forest D. it reaches into bees nests

31. What can be the best title for the text?

A. Wild Bees B. Wax and Honey

C. Beekeeping in Africa D. Honey-lovers Helper

D

While the start of a new school year is always exciting, this year was even more so for some elementary school students in Auckland, New Zealand. They became the worlds first kids to be “taught” by a digital (數(shù)碼的) teacher, Will. Before you start imagining a human-like robot walking around the classroom, Will is just an avatar (化身) that turns up on the students desktop, or smartphone screen when called.

Thanks to a digital camera and microphone, the avatar not only responds to questions the kids may have, but also picks up non-verbal signals. For example, if a student smiles at Will, he responds by smiling back. This two-way communication not only helps draw the students attention, but also allows the programs developers to monitor their involvement (參與) and make changes if needed.

Vectors Chief Digital Officer, Nikhil Ravishankar, believes that Will-like avatars could be a novel way to attract the attention of the next generation. He says, “Using a digital human is a very popular method to deliver new information to people.” Greg Cross, the Chief Business Officer for Soul Machines, states that kids who have grown up in this digital time adapt to new technology quickly, and he hopes to develop the idea of digital humans in the area of education further.

The program, in place since August 2018, has been a great success so far. However, no mater how popular it becomes, Will is unlikely to replace human educators any time soon. For one, the avatars knowledge base is severely limited. But more importantly, even the smartest digital avatars could never predict and react to all the unexpected situations that educators have to deal with on a daily basis. However, it could come in handy as a “personal teacher”, providing kids with one-on-one help on the subjects or even topics.

32.What was special for some of the students according to Paragraph 1?

A. A digital teacher taught them.

B. They first saw something digital.

C. This was the start of a new school year.

D. They could get close to smartphone screen.

33. In what way does the digital teacher help the students?

A. By taking part in discussion.

B. By changing teaching methods.

C. By communicating with students.

D. By keeping watch on students behavior.

34. What is Greg Crosss attitude toward the digital teacher?

A. Uncaring. B. Doubtful.

C. Supportive. D. Dissatisfied.

35.What can we learn about the digital teacher from the last paragraph?

A. It has entered many homes as kids private teacher.

B. It will teach in class in place of human educators.

C. It is good at handling unexpected situations.

D. It remains to be improved.

第二節(jié) 閱讀七選五(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)

If you plan to take your pet on a trip, prepare ahead of time.

See if he or she is fit for travel and ask if he or she should have any medicine before leaving. The vet may suggest certain pills for sickness or for calming the pet.

Some states or foreign countries have health laws that say animals must have certain injections (注射) before they can be allowed to enter.? You can also get help on the United States and Canadian laws from a book published by the Department of Agriculture which some libraries have. For information on foreign countries, check with their consulates (領(lǐng)事館) .

Find out if the places where you plan to stay allow pets because many do not.

If you are going by plane or train, ask if pets are allowed. If they are, ask where they will be kept and who will care for them. The big bus lines in this country do not allow pets.

Plastic boxes are better than cardboard or wooden ones because they can be chewed (嚼碎).

If going by plane or train during warm weather, try to go in the cooler early morning or evening hours. Also try to avoid very cold winter weather because pets often suffer from cold.

Do not leave the animal inside with the windows closed because the car may become too hot or too cold.

A. Your pet may need you badly.

B. Choose your pets box carefully.

C. Even in your own car, be careful.

D. The medicine helps pets keep quiet.

E. Your doctor for pets may have this information.

F. You can also ask the airlines on which you are traveling.

G. At least two weeks before you leave, take your pet to a vet.
