I feel so sorry for anybody who missed out on Psycho-Pass in 2012 because it was absolutely[絕對(duì)地] brilliant. Likewise, I also feel sorry for anybody who didnt, myself included, because Gen Urobuchi ripped[撕] peoples hearts out.
The series is set in the near future of 2113, in which it is possible to instantaneously[即刻] quantify[量化] a persons state of mind, personality, and probability of committing[犯] a crime, all recorded on an individuals Psycho-Pass. When someones Crime Coefficient[系數(shù)] index[指數(shù)] becomes too high and their Psycho-Pass color darkens, they will be “taken care of” by Inspectors[監(jiān)視官] and their “hunting dogs,” the Enforcers. The Public Safety Bureau[局] uses the system to uphold justice[伸張正義] in the seemingly Utopian[烏托邦的] society.
Before I continue speaking highly of it, let me clarify[澄清]: Psycho-Pass is bloody, violent and disturbing[令人不安的], and not for the weak-hearted. This anime has cruel scenes, both physically and mentally, and the director joked that he wanted the kids to sustain trauma[創(chuàng)傷] for life after watching it. But that is not why your heart will be ripped out.
Your heart will be ripped out because thats Urobuchis intention. He knows how to write people—realistic, human characters with attributes[特性], weakness, personal motivations[動(dòng)機(jī)] and incredible development (see: Nobuchika Ginoza). The audience doesnt suffer because tragic events happen, but because they happen to these characters whom you have grown to know and love and sympathize[同情的] with (see: Nobuchika Ginoza).
Theres also a lot of talk of human nature, the natures of societies, law and governance[統(tǒng)治], and the good and evil. Psycho-Pass is not a series to watch if you travel into anime to escape or like to keep your mind turned off. But the complexity[復(fù)雜性], the scifi[科幻] and crime mystery elements, and the blend of philosophy and literature make it too good to resist. It was the highlight of my week, every week, until the end.
Knowing Urobuchi was in charge of Season One used to have me worried. Knowing Urobuchi has teamed up with Tou Ubukata for the upcoming Season Two makes me very worried. But, at the end of the day, a good story is always worth it. Just bring it on!
