Qilin Zhang, an architecture and space photographer, has been engaged i n professional architecture and space photography for 12 years. As a member of China Photographers Association and Professional Photographers of America Association, Zhang has won many awards, such as the Industry Promotion Award of JINWA Prize, the American Gettyimage Photographer of the Year Award of China and the National Geographic Photo Competition Awards of the US.
On March 7, 2018, at 2:30 pm, the weather was fine. On a street in Chengdu, Sichuan province, Zhang set up a tripod, put on his camera and bent over. He put his right hand on the camera to adjust the focus and infatuatedly looked at the view in the viewfinder.
A few days later, in Sanya, Hainan Province, Zhang was in a black T-shirt. He still held his camera, staring at the white beach and the blue sea.
Zhang loves taking pictures and he never stopped his steps. He is either on the way to taking pictures or he is taking the picture. Architectural photography is his main business. For more than a decade, he has worked with these lines of architectural space through his lens. Although these lines are static and inanimate,he is always passionate.
Zhang majored in photography and he was graduated from Chongqing Normal University in 2004. Back then, photography was just a hobby for him, so he chose to be a graphic designer. As a graphic designer, he was once worked for the magazine-Look Yellow Page, where he occasionally took pictures 0f city buildings for a parttime job. One day, his friend asked him to take some pictures of sample space as a favor, and he did a fantastic job.
Gradually, increasing people come to him for architectural photography. In 2007, he quitted his job in order to devote himself to the study of space architecture photography. Ten years later, he has become one of the most famous architecture and space photographer in China. It is his current success that convinced him that photography was more than just a hobby.
What is behind the contingency is the inevitability.
Zhang said, “I clearly remembered that when I was in kindergarten, I only read comic books and colorful comic strips. My mother figured out that I like painting, so she taught me how to draw simple pictures. I started to learn colors and sketches from the first grade of elementary school to high school”.This allows Zhang to gradually form the aesthetic standard.
“When shooting architectures and space, photographers have to find a small but beautiful angle with best views from a large space”,Zhang said. The efforts he made in the past have strengthened his ability to observe and perceive things around him.
In 2007, architecture and space photography seemed to be a blank space. At that time, photos, portraits, and wedding photography were very popular. “I have undergone that no one has asked me to take pictures for nearly half a year. I could only rely on my designs to maintain my life”, said Zhang. However, Zhang never gave up. “As long as there is one person who asks me to take pictures, I will spare no efforts.”
In order to wait for the most suitable light, he was willing to stand by the camera for four hours;in order to find a perfect location to photograph, he could work on the top of a 60-storey building until the elevator stopped running and he had to walk down; for a perfect photo, he could sit in front of the computer for hours to fix the film...
Earlier this year, he went to photograph the Westin Element Chongli Hotel, near Taiwu Ski Resort in Zhangjiakou. Zhang said, “The outdoor temperature is minus 29 degrees Celsius, although I have worn all the clothes I have, I still felt so cold. The shooting takes at least half an hour. I stayed at outside for a few minutes, and then I walked into the house. After being warmed up, I went out and continue to photograph. I repeated this cycle four times until I finished my job”. He also said that this is not called “coldness” but “coolness”.
The present success comes from the past efforts.
“This is the IAC headquarters building in the United States. I did not start shooting until the dusk came and the crowd dispersed. You see, the orange light was reflected on the glass of the building...This is the Torre Agbar in Spain, which was taken at night.Don’t you think that it looks like a bullet? The purple lights of this building are very beautiful...”Zhang kept saying and looked at these pictures with the infinite tenderness.
Space and architectures are often static and huge. This means that the photographer must have a full understanding of the object. Therefore, Zhang would always pay the designer a visit before he started to take pictures.
Four years ago, the former president of Chongqing Architectural Design Institute, Li Bingqi came to Zhang and asked him to photograph the building of Chongqing municipal people’s government he designed. “President Li talked with me for an hour. He told me that this building was built in a republican-period style with a grey facade. The roof is very characteristic. It borrows from the traditional roof of stilted building prevalent in Sichuan and Chongqing areas. The hollow patterns carved on the roof cover the air conditioner, so no air conditioner can be seen from the outside.”
Zhang believes that every architecture has its soul and this soul is the very detail that the designer devoted all his efforts. The pitched roof is the entry point to show the building of Chongqing municipal people’s government by pictures. In order to find a good location to photograph, he climbed a billboard scaffold near the auditorium opposite the building... As a result, this photo may have helped the Chongqing Municipal Government Building become the only building in Chongqing that won the National Gold Award.
“I like Basilica and Expiatory Church of the Holy Family designed by Gaudí. He devoted his lifelong energy to it. Every detail is very elegant and touching”, Zhang said. Out of the admiration to great architects, Zhang formed high requirements for his photography. I should not only present the level, texture, color, and environment of the building, but also show “the personality and life of the building”.
To achieve this, he believes that maintaining original shape is the most important thing. On the basis of maintaining original shape, we should try to perceptually understand the building. Color, brightness, composition, all these elements are perceptual. The combination of them makes the photo a bit more artistic.
