It is a willow when summer is over,
a willow by the river
from which no leaf has fallen nor
bitten by the sun
turned orange or crimson1).
The leaves cling and grow paler,
swing and grow paler
over the swirling waters of the river
as if loth2) to let go,
they are so cool, so drunk with
the swirl of the wind and of the river—
oblivious3) to winter,
the last to let go and fall
into the water and on the ground.

這是一棵過完夏季的柳樹,
一棵河邊的柳樹,
沒有一片葉子飄落,也沒有
一片葉子在陽光的咬噬下
變得橙黃或者深紅。
樹葉固守著,顏色越來越淡,
搖曳著,越來越淡,
在盤旋的河水上空
似乎不愿離去,
如此淡定,陶醉于
風和水的漩流——
無視冬的存在,
直到最后才放松,飄落
