Chinese Music Wows Ten European Cities
By Lan Huacao
An 18-day European tour by the National Orchestra of Zhejiang Song and Dance Theatre joining hands with the Shaanxi Radio National Orchestra shared the Chinese New Year festivity and the magnificence of Chinese music with the audiences in 10 cities in Russia, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Republic of Lithuania, Poland and the UK earlier this year.
The tour also marked the success of a new attempt by Chinas Ministry of Culture in its Chinese culture promotion. “The concerts repertoire not only presented the highest level of Chinese national music to the world but also proved a great success in the fusion of Chinese and western orchestral music,” concluded by Xia Yang, director of the National Orchestra of Zhejiang Song and Dance Theatre.
Crafted jointly by Liu Huan and Jiang Ying, innovatively incorporates traditional Chinese landscape painting aesthetics into music composing. The grandeur, vastness and vitality of the Fuchun mountain and river vista are translated into musical tranquility and minimalism. With the performance of the orchestral suite reaching its climax, the beauty of the Fuchun landscape is “heard” by the audience.
On the other end of the spectrum is , a sonorous piece in which the loud and high-pitched sound of suona interplays with the stringed music to fill the hearts of everyone in the audience with heroism, enthusiasm and aspiration.
, a symphonic suite by famous composer Zhao Jiping, celebrates the beauty of romance and love. It is Chinas first orchestral piece that truly combines Chinese and western elements.
The biggest highlight of the repertoire is the composers Silk Road Fantasy, with the cultural background set in the flourishing times of the Tang Dynasty. The baton of the conductor guided the audience into an exotic wonderland from the remote times. Everyone in the audience heard the jingle of camel bells and saw the sand blown by the relentless gusts in the desert.
To meet the needs of the enthusiastic audience, the organizer had to schedule an encore for every performance during the 18 days.
At the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, the ensemble had to encore 10 times to reward the passionate applauses. “Enjoying traditional Chinese music in the worlds oldest theatre was an experience beyond description,” enthused an audience member.
“The emotional interplay between the performers and the audience just felt amazing,” said Xiao Sining, a ‘ performer, after the show at the Great Amber Concert Hall in the port city of Liepaja, Latvia.
The performance at the Estonia Concert Hall triggered many peoples interest in the Silk Road culture and history. “With the intensified bilateral ties between China and Estonia, recent years have seen the deepening of cultural communication between the countries, and the success of the tour serves as a brilliant example of how music lights up the passion in the restrained Estonians,” observed Qu Zhe, Chinese ambassador to Estonia.
