DISCOVER THE FULFILLMENT OF AN ACADEMIC LIFE AT TSINGHUA

The attraction of China and Chinese universities to international experts has increased with growing support from both government and universities. Talent experts from around the world are being offered more choices and opportunities in their career development at Tsinghua University.

Daniel A. Bell became interested in China after he met the Chinese woman who became his wife when they were both postgraduates at Oxford. After working in Singapore, the USA and Hong Kong, Bell took up a position in 2004 at Tsinghua. He is now a professor in the university's Department of Philosophy.

The courses taught by Bell in comparative political philosophy are always welcomed by students. Bell and his students often discuss and compare readings from different political traditions, including Chinese classics.

“What's good about Tsinghua is that we have very talented students and colleagues who are a constant source of inspiration,” said Bell“, My area of research is political theory and I'm directly inspired by my surroundings and the sorts of political debates that take place here.”

Bell is also the author of numerous books includingThe China Model: Political Meritocracy and the Limits of Democracy, which is“ a direct product of discussions” with his students, colleagues and friends. The book has been selected as a "best book of 2015" by theFinancial Times. His articles and books have been translated into Chinese and22 other languages.

Kihwan Kim had never imagined working in China. Before being offered an opportunity from Tsinghua University, Kim had been in Korea, Austria, and the USA, developing his career and research skills.

“The opportunity was wonderful and I believed it was worthwhile to take the challenge,” he said“, life at Tsinghua as a professor is quite similar to what I had imagined. I am very happy and feel a great gratitude for the opportunity.”

Since 2011, Kim has been an associate professor in the Institute for Interdisciplinary Information Sciences at Tsinghua University. He and his team conduct cutting edge research into the physical development of a quantum computer, with the ability to surpass the performance in solving spec ific problems of any other currently existing supercomputer in the world.

“The students I've been working with at Tsinghua are very talented in their unique ways,” said Kim.

At Tsinghua, he also teaches courses from basic sciences to frontier research, including quantum mechanics, atomic physics, optics, quantum information science and quantum computation, as well as experimental research.

Both Bell and Kim have happily made Beijing their home and continue to develop their careers at Tsinghua University. They both agree the choices they made to live and work in China have reaped rich rewards.

引智中國：他們在清華收獲未來

隨著人才引進(jìn)力度的進(jìn)一步加大，中國高校對外籍專家的吸引力與日俱增。清華大學(xué)，也為來自世界各地的學(xué)者提供了多元的職業(yè)發(fā)展機(jī)會。

加拿大籍教授貝淡寧，在牛津求學(xué)時與中國妻子結(jié)緣，也對中國產(chǎn)生了濃厚興趣。

繼在新加坡、美國和中國香港工作后，2004年，貝淡寧來到中國清華大學(xué)哲學(xué)系任教。他講授的“比較政治哲學(xué)”課程深受同學(xué)喜愛。他常和學(xué)生們交流互動，探討各種政治思想——包括中國的儒家經(jīng)典哲學(xué)。“清華有很多才智過人的學(xué)生和學(xué)者，與他們討論，我總能得到許多啟發(fā)。”

貝淡寧的文章和著作曾被翻譯成22種語言，在國內(nèi)外廣為流傳。其中，《中國模式：賢能政治與民主的局限》入選2015年英國《金融時報》最佳圖書。

韓國學(xué)者金奇奐在清華大學(xué)工作前，也曾在韓國、奧地利和美國發(fā)展。“在清華工作，對我來說是機(jī)遇，也是挑戰(zhàn)。現(xiàn)在看來，這里和我所期待的一樣，是我最理想的追求職業(yè)發(fā)展的地方?！?/p>

“我在清華接觸到的學(xué)生，都是各界精英！”金奇奐感嘆道。

自2011年起，擔(dān)任清華大學(xué)交叉信息研究院副教授的金奇奐和他的離子量子計算研究小組開展了大量實(shí)驗(yàn)研究，發(fā)表了多項(xiàng)成果。他教授的課程涉及基礎(chǔ)科學(xué)和前沿科學(xué)，包括量子力學(xué)、原子物理學(xué)、光學(xué)、量子信息學(xué)、量子計算等。
