The site of the Zhou Chunya Art studio is surrounded by water on three sides, typical of the water towns in the lower Yangtze Valley. To adapt to such environment's natural and wild charm, fair-faced concrete is applied to both the building's surface and structure, which correspondingly also embodies the art studio's spatial character and atmosphere.
The starting point of the design consists mainly in the working and living requirements of the artist himself. The overall structure is divided into two parts – east and west – according to site characters. The east part, a longitudinal band along the river, accommodates the artist's working and living space, which as a whole is relatively enclosed for the purpose of privacy. The west part of the site originally had a relocated traditional building, which was completely preserved during the construction process. It served as a main clue for the design of the new studio, creating a spatial sequence in the building-courtyard composition, which is used for more frequent public exhibitions. Due to the height difference between the two parts, the roof of the single-storey section of the west part is adapted into a patio, and is connected to the artist's working and living space through various means of circulation; this way the public area is enlarged, offering multiple functional possibilities while providing the studio with an open panorama.
Spring is the rainy season in the lower Yangtze Valley, so open ditches are used for rooftop drainage; together with the remolded clerestory windows, it makes the dripping rainwater a visible scene – a display of local character.
