Dogs can see and understand images on television similarly to the way we do， and they are clever enough to recognize images of animals on screen as they would in real life—even animals theyve never seen before. They can also recognize TV dog sounds， like barking.

狗狗能看得懂電視上的圖像，這與我們?nèi)祟愵H有些相似。它們還聰明到能辨出畫面上的動(dòng)物——無論他們是否在現(xiàn)實(shí)中見過這種動(dòng)物。它們還能辨認(rèn)出電視里傳來的犬吠聲。

A 2013 study showed that dogs could recognize images of other dogs among pictures of humans and other animals， using their visual1 sense alone.

2013年有一份研究表明，僅憑視覺感官，狗狗們就能從人和其他動(dòng)物的圖片中，分辨出自己的同類。

However， there are some differences between ourselves and dogs—for one， dogs eyes identify images more quickly than ours. So older television sets， which show fewer frames2 per second than modern televisions， would appear to a dog to be flickering3 like a 1920s movie， said Nicholas Dodman at Tufts University， in Massachusetts.

但是，我們?nèi)祟惡凸愤€是有些不同點(diǎn)。其中之一就是，狗識別圖像的速度要比我們快許多。因此，要是一臺老式電視放在狗狗們面前，由于老電視每秒的幀數(shù)比現(xiàn)代電視要少，它們只會覺得自己在看上世紀(jì)20年代的老默片電影，馬薩諸塞州塔夫斯大學(xué)的尼古拉斯·杜曼說道。

Dogs have dichromatic4 vision， which means they see a range of two primary colors， yellow and blue. Human vision is trichromatic5， so we see a colorful world.

狗的視覺是雙色，這意味著它們能看到是兩種基色的世界——黃色和藍(lán)色。人類的視覺則可以辨別三原色，因此我們看到一個(gè)豐富多彩的世界。

DogTV， an HDTV channel designed for dogs， interests dogs because it has a much higher number of frames per second and is specially colored to fit dogs vision.

狗狗愛看專為它們設(shè)計(jì)的高清頻道——狗狗頻道（DogTV）是因?yàn)檫@個(gè)頻道每秒幀數(shù)更多，而且顏色特別適應(yīng)狗狗的視覺。

DogTV has many kinds of programs for relaxing， like dogs walking freely on a grassy field， dogs surfing in southern California， a dog reacting to a ringing doorbell and obeying orders， etc..

狗狗頻道提供各種各樣的休閑節(jié)目：有狗狗在草地上自由自在地散步；有狗狗在南加州沖浪，還有播放狗狗聽到門鈴做出反應(yīng)、聽從指揮，等等。

Beyond physiology6， how dogs react to TV—whether its running around， barking excitedly， or just ignoring it—may come down to personality or breed7.

除了生理上的原因外，汪星人對電視的反應(yīng)也有可能“因狗而異”。到底是興奮地到處跑、大聲叫喚，還是高冷地不理不睬，這都有可能是因?yàn)楣饭返男愿窕蚱贩N不同而產(chǎn)生差異。

“Different dogs， like people， have different personalities，” Dodman said. “Some like people， some hate people； some are aggressive8， some arent； some are pushy， some are shy.”

“和人一樣，不同的狗狗，性格也有所不同?！倍怕f，“有些狗狗喜歡與人親近，有些則不喜歡人類；有些狗狗攻擊性強(qiáng)，有些則不然；有些狗狗愛出風(fēng)頭，有些則比較靦腆?！?/p>

“It takes all types of dogs to make the world colorful，” he added.

Hearing a barking dog on the set often gets TV-watching dogs excited. Some dogs not only bark at animals on the screen， but also run behind the TV looking for them. But not all dogs would act like that.endprint

聽到電視上傳來犬吠聲，看電視的狗狗都會跟著興奮起來。有些狗狗不僅會在熒幕前試圖與畫面上的動(dòng)物對話，還會繞到電視后面一探究竟。但并不是所有的狗狗都有這樣的反應(yīng)。

What breed a dog is may influence its reactions to TV. Hounds9， which are driven by smell， arent as interested in visuals， but herding10 dogs， may be more likely to act to the moving objects they see on the screen.

狗狗的品種會決定它們對電視的反應(yīng)。像獵犬那樣嗅覺靈敏的狗狗，在視覺上的興趣不會很大；但是牧羊犬就更容易對電視上運(yùn)動(dòng)的物體產(chǎn)生反應(yīng)。

Many of us leave a radio or TV on when we leave the house to keep our dog company， hoping that the sound will comfort to our pets.

許多人在離開家的時(shí)候，都會給汪星人打開收音機(jī)或者電視，給它們做個(gè)伴，希望這些聲響對狗狗們來說有所安慰。

Channels that designed for animals might be preferable to news programs， but， like many humans， dogs often just half-watch TV anyway.

因此，專為動(dòng)物設(shè)計(jì)的電視頻道也許是比新聞節(jié)目更合適，但是汪星人也和人類一樣，看電視三心二意。

“They prefer to things theyre interested in， look at it for a couple of minutes and go ‘hmm， interesting， and then look away，” said Dodman. “Even so， thats better than turning their wheels all day while their owners are away.”

“它們喜歡先看自己感興趣的東西，看電視看了幾分鐘就會覺得‘嗯，有點(diǎn)意思，然后目光就轉(zhuǎn)移到別的地方去了?！倍怕f，“盡管如此，對于狗狗來說，主人不在時(shí)，看電視還是比轉(zhuǎn)一整天輪子有趣?！?/p>
