“There will always be bears, and there will always be bulls, but one can never know when one will dominate the other.” This quote by noted economist William Urster efficiently summarizes the economic theory of market cycles, in which periods of economic growth must inevitably be followed by periods of downturn, and vice versa. These respective periods play off one another, reinforcing a positive trend of growth over the long term.

It is a tradition on Wall Street to refer to periods of sustained economic loss and recession as “bear” markets. The name is derived from the way a bear attacks its prey, by swinging downward with its claws, thus indicating the markets downward charted trend. The “bull” market, however, is explained as following the upward motion a bull uses to attack its enemy with its horns, signaling an upward trend for the economy. As the bear and the bull do battle, the investors find the economy quite unpredictable, and thus hard to apply the timehonored philosophy of buying stocks when the market is low, so as to sell when the market is high, at a substantial profit.

Such market timing is not necessary, however. Over the history of the American stock exchange, the longterm pattern for the economy has always been up. In fact, the American economy, as gauged by the Standard and Poors Index, has grown at an astonishing 11% average per year. Thus, by simply investing at an appropriate time and keeping ones money in the market, longterm investors who can stomach the rollercoaster (忽好忽壞的) ride through the down periods will come out much richer for it in the long run.

Few seem to have the patience and discipline to think longterm in the market, however, preferring to gamble instead, by hopping in and out of stocks, hoping to catch the buy at the lowest point and the sell at the highest. It has been statistically proven, however, that such shortterm trading tends to result in losses over time. Aside from losses due to bad sales, tax consequences and brokerage fees chip away at these shortsighted traders pockets, reinforcing the lesson. “Patience is a virtue,” its said, and the stock market certainly provides no exception.

4. It is argued that the least successful investors are those who ? ?.

A. invest only in the short term

B. try to time market periods by constantly buying and selling

C. maintain a longterm view of the economy

D. have the discipline to invest for longterm periods

5. The underlined word “gauged” means ? ?.

A. calculated something by using a particular instrument

B. tried to make a judgment about something

C. made an estimate

D. expressed an opinion about something

6. What can be inferred from the text?

A. If an investor has patience, he will see his money grow in the stock market.

B. Without discipline, an investor cannot make money in the United States stock market.

C. The US economy is best characterized by the metaphor of the bull.

D. Even when losses are suffered, a longterm approach will end in profit.

C

Every runner has experienced a lack of motivation. However, how about a race through the vineyards (葡萄園) of some of the North Americas most wellknown wine regions? Instead of running towards a finish line stocked with bananas, and slight warm water, how about heading towards a music festival with lots of winemakers generously pouring their favorite products. Thats the type of motivation that can help you ignore the couch, and instead, hit the pavement.

The idea of creating an event that draws athletes due to its location is nothing new. Do you think that the Ironman Championships would be as big of an event today, if they had been held in Nebraska, instead of Hawaii? Doubtful. In 2004 when Destination Races founder Matt Dockstader organized the first NapatoSonoma Half Marathon, he created an example for a rapidly developing and highly popular race series.

He explains the first race thus “I loved to run, but I hated dealing with the large crowds at most races. I thought we could organize a fun event based around good times, instead of your normal finish where runners get a power drink and head out, we would create a festival to celebrate the finish. We encourage our participants to relax after their run, and enjoy the beautiful scenery they just ran through, with some wine and music.”

Ten years later the Wine County Half Marathon series has expanded to seven different locations across North America. The main race sponsor for this years series is Newton Running, a company whose shoes are favored by tritoathletes and road racers. So why would Newton jump into this race series?

Mike Nesladek of Newton sums it up thus “We are a shoe company with performance roots who see the market evolving, and more people every day running for fun and enjoyment. We were founded out of a passion for running, and everyone who works at Newton loves to run. If we can help more people enjoy running with our shoes then we are successful. Destination Races seem like the ideal event to show our products to the public.”

Walking amongst the runners after the race you see all shapes and sizes. There are large groups of women wearing pink shirts with the phrase “Will run for wine” on the back. Two guys who look like Magnum P.I. are wandering near the woodfired pizza oven; several younger girls dressed as bumblebees run by giggling loudly. I would say that this is more of an event than a distance race.

7. What does “the type of motivation” in paragraph 1 refer to ? ??

A. The vineyards of North America

B. The finish line of a half marathon

C. The environment of running a race

D. The music festival during a race

8. According to Matt Dockstader, after the Wine County Half Marathon, ? ?.

A. the winner will all enjoy a power drink

B. the runners will enjoy a relaxing atmosphere

C. a celebration will be held in another place

D. a large crowd will be invited for a ceremony

9. Whats the main purpose of Newton Running in supporting the race series?

A. To advise its products.

B. To meet its employees requirements.

C. To provide runners with their shoes.

D. To attract runners to attend the event.

10. From the passage we can infer that the Wine Country Half Marathon series ? ?.

A. develops very fast ? ? B. is worth joining in

C. isnt a distance race D. focuses on racing

六、任務(wù)型閱讀(共10小題;每小題1分,滿分10分)

How does the waste get in your blood? Well, your blood sends nutrients to your body. Chemical changes occur in the cells of your body to break down the nutrients. Some of the waste is the result of these chemical changes. Some is just what your body doesnt need because it already has enough. The waste has to go somewhere; this is where the kidneys come in. In other words, your kidneys take the waste from your blood and sent it out of your body as urine (尿液). In addition, your kidneys help balance your bodys water, salt, and mineral levels so your other organ and bones can do their best work. They help produce red blood cells and a form of vitamin D, which promotes healthy bones. If thats not enough, they help keep your blood pressure at a healthy level. So your kidneys are important organs in your body.

Unfortunately, not all kidneys work perfectly. Someones kidneys can have problems. Kidneys problems are often not noticed at an early stage. As the illness progresses, someone with a kidney disease may pee too much or too little, have blood in the urine, feel tired, itchy (癢的), or dizzy. The person also might have swollen eyes, ankles, or feet because the body has trouble getting rid of extra fluid. Someone who has these problems needs to go to the doctor and receive some medical checks.

The treatment for kidney problems may include diet changes, vitamins, minerals, and medications to help with growth and to prevent bone disease. Kids with kidney problems are more likely to get high blood pressure, which can be harmful if it isnt controlled. In such cases, a kid may have to take blood pressure medicine. For kidneys that need even more help, doctors might suggest dialysis, a process that cleans the blood. A kidney transplant is another possibility. In this operation, doctors replace a kidney that doesnt work with a healthy kidney donated by another person.

Kids who have kidney problems are just like other kids, but they may have to take special medicine or go to the hospital for treatments. They will also need to talk with their doctors about participating in sports, but often they can join in the fun. Some kids may need to avoid contact sports, such as football. Kids with kidney illnesses may also need to talk with a doctor about the foods they eat. Some kids wont have to follow any special diet, but others may need to avoid salty foods and limit the amount of fluid they drink. In a word, its no fun to be sick, no matter the cause. But the good news for kids with kidney problems is that they can take steps to become healthier and feel better, with a little help from their families and doctors.

Reading Is to Soul What Food Is to Body

Recently, a survey aimed at teenagers afterclass reading was made, which shows that about half of the students dont have the habit of reading books after school. Besides, the number of students reading masterpieces is decreasing.

As for the reasons, the burden of study is the most important one. Students have to deal with much homework every day and thus have little time for reading. In addition, computers and televisions also occupy much spare time of the students.

In reality, reading books especially materpieces is of great significance. Not only can reading masterpieces broaden our horizons but it can also help us form a positive outlook on value. Without reading, students wont get much improvement, as books are our spiritual meals.

Read more masterpieces and swim freely in the ocean of knowledge, and you will find it interesting to read them. Consequently, you will become a respectable person. (135 words)
