譚月/譯

泰戈爾（1861年—1941年）是印度著名詩人、文學家、社會活動家、哲學家和印度民族主義者。1913年，他以《吉檀迦利》成為第一位獲得諾貝爾文學獎的亞洲人。他的詩中含有深刻的宗教和哲學的見解，在印度享有史詩的地位，代表作有《吉檀迦利》、《飛鳥集》、《園丁集》、《新月集》、《最后的詩篇》、《戈拉》等。

1. If you shed1 tears when you miss the sun， you also miss the stars.

如果你因為錯過了太陽而淚濕眼眶，那么你也將錯過繁星。

2. We read the world wrong and say that it deceives2 us.

我們誤解了這個世界，卻說是世界欺騙了我們。

3. Let life be beautiful like summer flowers and death like autumn leaves.

就讓生如夏花之絢爛，死如秋葉之靜美。

4. It is the tears of the earth that keep her smiles in bloom.

瀑布歌唱道：“當我得到自由時，便有了歌聲。”

7. The stars are not afraid to appear like fireflies5.

群星不會因為自己像小小螢火蟲而怯于出現(xiàn)。

8. We come nearest to the great when we are great in humility6.

當我們極謙卑時，便幾近于偉大。

9. The sparrow is sorry for the peacock at the burden of its tail.

麻雀因孔雀馱著大大的翎尾而為它擔憂。

10. The scabbard is content7 to be dull when it protects the keenness of the sword.

劍鞘保護著劍的鋒利，卻不在乎它自己的遲鈍。

11. “The learned say that your lights will one day be no more.” said the firefly to the stars. The stars made no answer.

螢火蟲對星星說：“學者說你的光總有一天會熄滅?！毙切切Χ徽Z。

12. The dust receives insult8 and in return offers her flowers.

塵土承受屈辱，卻開出鮮花作為回報。

13. God is ashamed9 when the prosperous boasts10 of his special favor.

當富貴榮華之人吹噓說自己得到上帝的恩惠時，上帝卻尷尬不已。

14. Not hammer-strokes， but dance of the water sings the pebbles into perfection.

不是錘的敲打，而是水的載歌載舞，使鵝卵石近乎完美。

15. Gods great power is in the gentle breeze11， not in the storm.

上帝的無窮力量深藏在和煦微風中，而不展示于狂風暴雨中。

16. By plucking12 her petals you do not gather the beauty of the flower.

采摘花瓣不能拼湊出花的美麗。

17. The cloud stood humbly13 in a corner of the sky. The morning crowned it with splendor.

白云謙卑地站在天邊，晨光給它披上壯麗的光彩。

18. God loves mans lamp-lights better than his own great stars.

相對于天上的群星，上帝更偏愛人間的燈火。

19. Dark clouds become heavens flowers when kissed by light.

當黑云得到光的親吻時，就變成了天上的花朵。

20. The little flower lies in the dust. It sought the path of the butterfly.

小花躺在在塵土中，尋求蝴蝶走過的路。
