Imagine, in a midsummer night, you want to go out for a walk and relieve the summer heat, on your way to the promenade garden, what is lightening for you is the flowers and plants of fragrance, instead of the traditional electric lights, what a wonderful feeling! Its not so far from us in the real life, for the biotechnology company Bioglow has developed the worlds first commercially availabel glowing plants.
In the past 30 years, some plants have been described that they may shine. However, these plants can produce a brief glow effect only with the help of dyeing, chemical treatment or induced by the ultraviolet radiation. The plants cultivated by the Bioglow company can produce natural light, means that the plants may shine themselves without the chemicals involved in or the ultraviolet radiation. Like the fireflies and other creatures which may shine in the nature, the luminescence mechanism of glowing plants is within their cell genetic encoding, such mechanism can make plants to emit visible light continuously in the life cycle. To achieve this goal, the scientists of Bioglow firstly shot the nano particle coated with lightening gene into a plant with air gun, then, the surviving plant cells after “injured” integrate the lightening gene into their own chloroplast DNA, finally, the plant grows into a glowing plant under the acition of proper nutrition and hormone.
Perhaps inspired by the colourful and shining plants in the science fiction film “Avatar”, people call the plant “ Star Avatar”. Now scientists are making effort to bring us more clean, suitainable and lower-cost plant lighting, which will replace the coal power which may cause environmental pollution.
