For thousands of years, sailors have made model ships, using materials such as wood or whalebone. They made the model ships as presents for their families or friends, or even to pay off debts.
We do not know when the first ship in a bottle was made, although some experts believe the hobby started about five hundred years ago. The worlds oldest ship in a bottle is in a museum in Germany. It was built in 1784 by an Italian named Gioni Biondo. The models from that time were made by craftsmen (工匠), and were presented as gifts to kings, queens and other important people. In the next century, however, sailors started to make ships in a bottle, because glass bottles were coming into use for beer, whisky and rum at that time. Therefore, it was easy for the sailors to get the basic materials. Usually they made a model of their own ships.
Nowadays, many different people make ships in bottles. And not just ships—you can find buses, cars, fire engines, aeroplanes, houses, shops and many other kinds of models inside bottles.

Every time I think of happiness I should sink into my sweet memories. My fun memory of childhood is one silly thing, a kind trick.
The story begins that our cat gave birth to two babies in a shelf secretly. We were very happy with a little sadness because we love cats but we already had got two and mum told us she was looking for someone to adopt the baby cats. We were unwilling to send them out, nor were we brave enough to annoy mum by opposing her. So what? We are good teammates and we chose to cover the truth! Luckily we got to a very large porch where our parents seldom went up. We keep a shelf there to support the kittens. We made them a warm bed with cotton and made sure the shelf was strong enough to resist wind or rain. We made an agreement to tell mum that from then on we did the cleaning jobs and mention nothing about the kitten things to anyone.
However, one day my mum accidentally visited the porch to do some cleaning and was surprised to find the cats mum with her babies rightly sleeping in a nice shelf ! She was so curious and we were so worried. My elder sister had gone to school and we three found nothing to explain but to tell mum the truth. We were so sad and begging mum to keep them stay. We promised not to cheat mum again and should study harder.Luckily dad and mum cared our thoughts so much that we won at last and got the right to keep them. All we learnt in this lesson is that its right to help the weak and struggle for the things we love, but we ought to tell the truth, always, and in another way, we should learn to communicate first.
Now time changed, but love still. Things changed, and memories still.

If everyone behaves by this way, the world will be the big rubbish dump with flies flying round and people will live in a world of diseases. Koalas are found only in Australia. Even if called koala bear, this animal has nothing to do with the actual bear; it is not only a mammal (哺乳動(dòng)物), but a marsupial (有袋動(dòng)物), like the kangaroo. Its closest living relatives are the wombats (毛鼻袋熊). A koala is about 60-80cm long and weighs 5-14kg.
The name “koala” means “no drink”, and refers to the koalas ability to go for days without water. Koalas get the water content they need from the eucalyptus (桉樹(shù)) leaves on which they feed. The koala is the only mammal with a digestive system that can feed only on eucalyptus leaves—by the way, these leaves are highly poisonous if eaten by humans. One individual consumes about 5kg of eucalyptus leaves daily and it may never drink water!
The koala is a nocturnal mammal. They prefer to move around just after sunset, spending daytime sleeping in the fork of a tree. A koala spends 75% of its time sleeping. The eucalyptus leaves they eat are rich in fiber and poor in proteins and fats. The adult must detoxify (給……排毒) leaves with energy expense, while fiber is hard to break down. Because of this poor diet, koalas save energy by sleeping most of the day, while their movements are very slow.
Koalas only have one young per year. In summer, baby koalas are born about a month after mating. The female takes it with her mouth and places it into her pocket. In the sixth months, the young can get out and feed on leaves. There are probably around 2,000 to 8,000 wild koalas in Australia at present. The extremely fine gray fur is the reason why koalas were heavily hunted in the past. Koalas are killed every year by dogs, cats, dingoes, eagles and owls. They also die of disease and accidents.

We students thought the school looks like a desert and the walls are like the grey sky in a rainy day. We would be much happier and able to study better if the wall of the school could be decorated with posters, photos and paintings, that could certainly broaden our horizons and enrich our lives. Original art works are too expensive, but unless we buy art posters, the cost will be lowly. Use only a few money, we can make our school a nicer place.

Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register (現(xiàn)金出納機(jī)), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.
I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friends .We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.
I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holiday meaningful.
Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that Id left the lights on all day, and the battery was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership — a shop selling cars—was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.
“Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?” I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment, so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you, and it meant a lot, he said.

Many students start working during holidays to add extra money to their pockets. It also puts students in an environment where they learn new things. That is a way different from school activities and educational atmosphere. Landing a holiday job becomes easy when students realize what the jobs that they are interested in are. Now lets see how to land a holiday job.
Holiday hiring usually begins during the fall season. Therefore, you should keep your resume (簡(jiǎn)歷) ready with all necessary details in it, write more on your educational background and career goals. Mention your previous job experiences if you have worked in holidays. Express your hobbies, interests, and skills in your resume. An excellent resume provides greater chances of employment.
You should start looking for jobs at least a month before your holidays begin. Now if you are a fresher, then you must be wondering where to look for a holiday job and how to get a holiday job. Do not limit yourself to only one field. Register yourself in job websites and post your resume in their sites. You will find a large number of holiday jobs for students that will match your interest. Newspapers and magazines also have thousands of job advertisements for students.
I repeat once again that you do not limit yourself to a single field, because it will limit your opportunity of landing a proper holiday job. Mail your resume to the expected companies or you can directly walk into their offices. Once you are chosen, they will ask you to join on a specific date. If you complete these processes before your vacation begins, then you can join in your vacation. In short, an early start is needed.
Once you have started working, you will soon experience the satisfaction of earning money. Last but not least, remember to discuss with your parents before making any decision.

Not long ago I was in a pub called the Elephant and Castle in London, and I got talking to a woman, an oldish (稍老的)woman. We were talking about this and that, and she said she used to be a cleaner down in the Underground. They sweep out between the lines on one station, and then, in a group of about six or seven, walked on to the next station along the lines in the tunnels. Anyway this woman (I dont know her name) said to me: “Did you ever hear talk of the Bakerloo flea?”
“Bakerloo flea?” I said. “No, no, never.”
“Well,” she said, “you know there are rats down there — down the Underground? Hundreds of them. The thing is,” she said, “that some of them have grown enormous (巨大的). Huge great big things.”
“Ive heard of them,”I said. “Super rats.”
“Right,” she said. “Now you tell me,” she said, “what lives on rats? Fleas, right? Fleas. So—the bigger the rats, the bigger the fleas. Stands to reason. These rats, they feed on all the old garbage that people throw down on the lines. Its amazing what people throw away, you know.”
She told me they found a steak down there once, lipstick, a bowler hat, beads, a box of eggs and hundreds and hundreds of sweets—especially Maltesers and those balls of bubble gum (泡泡糖) you get out of slot machines.
“Anyway, the rats eat these, get big, and it seems that one day they were working the Bakerloo Line—Elephant and Castle to Finchley Road — and just before Baker Street one of the women in the gang was looking ahead, and she screamed out: ‘Look! look! “The other day I was taking my daughter to school when a young woman suddenly walked straight off the pavement in front of my car, eyes glued to her phone as she was texting. I hit the brakes and slid to a stop, just in time not to run into her. What a near miss!” “Lady, I beg you to look where youre going!” A man complained to a journalist yesterday.
In fact, of more than 1,000 people crossing 20 different roads in Seattle, 10% were listening to music, 7% were texting and 6% were having conversations on the phone, the journal Injury Prevention reports and it estimates there was a 5% rise in the number of pedestrian deaths and injuries from June 2012.
The texters were four times more likely to ignore red lights or fail to look both ways before crossing. And it took almost two seconds longer to cross the road. Listening to music seems to shorten the time taken to cross the road, but when they were doing it they were less likely to look both ways before crossing.
Kevin Clinton, from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, said, “Looking properly when you are walking is as important as when you are driving, so take care not to be dangerously distracted, whether by mobile phones, listening to music or being caught up in conversations with other people. Road users need to be turned into whats happening around them and shouldnt do the wrong thing at the wrong time. We have always told motorists to look out for pedestrians. Now we are increasingly telling pedestrians to look out for motorists. A change in attitudes, similar to efforts around drunk-driving, will be important to limit the risk of pedestrian misbehavior.”

Most of us have a sweet tooth and a favorite form of sweets is chocolate. The huge range of chocolate products on display in sweet shops and supermarkets shows us how popular chocolate is. Indeed, some of us are so fond of it that we become chocoholics.
We are regularly told that a diet containing too much sugar and too much fat is bad for us, and chocolate contains a great deal of both of these. Thus, we have got used to the idea that eating chocolate is a guilty pleasure.
Eating chocolate often makes us feel good. Even some health experts do not deny this, because it is thought to have a biochemical effect on the part of the brain that is concerned with pleasure. If you are feeling depressed, some chocolate can be a real help which cheers you up instantly. Unfortunately, this effect lasts just for only a short time and you soon feel down again.
Nutritionists have tended to concentrate on the negative effects of chocolate, pointing out that the combination of a high fat content and a high sugar content can be a cause of overweight in people who takes too much of it .They also remind us that foods which are high in fat can lead to heart disease. There are a number of special days of the year that are celebrated in different countries. One of the most popular of these, even though it is fairly recent, is Mothers Day. Mothers have always been highly regarded in all cultures. The Ancient Romans had a festival known as Hilaria, during which children took presents to the temple of the “Mother of the Gods”. The Christian Church adopted this idea and called it Mothering Sunday. However, over the years the custom was gradually forgotten and almost disappeared by the end of the 19th century.
Born in 1864 in Virginia, USA, Anna Jarvis was a school teacher and believed children should show gratitude to their mothers for all their love and care. Encouraged by a friend, she wrote to thousands of important people—politicians, churchmen, doctors, city officials—and asked them to support her ideas: a special day of the year for thanking mothers.
In 1910, the Governor of West Virginia introduced Mothers Day into the state. The date chosen was May 10—the second Sunday in May, which is still observed in America today. This date was chosen because May 10 was the date on which in 1908 Anna Jarvis mother died. In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson made May 10 the official date for Mothers Day throughout the United States.
Soon there was a Mothers Day International Association and the custom began to be adopted in many countries of the world.
Anna Jarvis, a sad and disillusioned woman, died in 1948. The custom she had worked so hard to establish and which had become almost universal had lost its original purpose. It had been taken over by business. As with Christmas, the giving of presents and the sending of cards had become a multi-million-dollar industry.
