Chengdu International Sister Cities Exhibition Hall Telling Chengdu’s international exchange stories to citizens
International sister cities are an important vehicle and platform of opening-up. It is quite pivotal to leverage international sister cities to serve local opening-up efforts. Chengdu Foreign Affairs Office opens up Chengdu International Sister Cities Exhibition Hall as a manifestation of internationalization. From 10 a.m. to 17 p.m., citizens can visit for free and get to know stories of Chengdu’s international exchanges throughout the years.
Opened on July 1, 2013, the exhibition hall has an exhibition area of 1102.7 square meter with the theme of“an open Chengdu”. Divided through different regions, it has a main hall, an European hall, an American hall, an Asian hall, an Oceanic hall and an African hall, adopting over 10 categories and 140 pieces of foreign affairs gifts such as paintings, books, garments, sculptures and national music instrument. Chengdu citizens, therefore, are offered a window to know the world and the sister cities at home.
Located in the northwest corner of Tianfu Square, or the geographic center of the city, Chengdu International Sister Cities Exhibition Hall used to be the first office area of Chengdu municipal government. In March 2011, the city renovated it. Chengdu Planning Commission solicited opinions from the society about the renovated usage of this area. After voting for more than one month, over 70% of citizens approved the usage of international exchanges. The municipal government eventually agreed to adopt this comment, thus the Exhibition Hall is born.
With diversified ways of major exchange events, introduction of sister cities, foreign affair gifts and photography, the Exhibition Hall truly retrieves Chengdu’s reform and openingup journey in over 30 years and vividly manifests every fi rm footprint of the city’s international exchanges through old items carrying historical memories, old preserved pictures and glorious trophies and medals.
The Exhibition Hall not only opens up a window for citizens to know international sister cities at home, but also will be built into a youth patriotism education base with a set of commentary specifically designed for students. To foreign visitors, the trip to the Exhibition Hall is also tinged with emotion as it has become a marketing platform for Chengdu by gathering abstract shards of the city’s internationalization to an intuitive wholeness, promoting the city’s international image, enhancing mutual communication between people and cities and raising international reputation and infl uence of the city.
It is learnt that Chengdu Foreign Affairs Office will also delve into historical and cultural background of all exhibited artifacts, find out stories and cultural roots behind them, enrich the historical and cultural dimension of the Exhibition Hall and build it into a“showroom” of opening-up, a“meeting room”of international exchanges, a“service station”for outbound citizens and an “elementary class”of international awareness cultivation for youngsters, render new dynamism for internationalization drive as well as contribute to better international exchange skills of citizens.
