Boss 1: Hard to believe its been seven years.
Mickey: Time flies when youre working your ass off. Excuse me, doing your lifes work.
Boss 1: So where do you stand on the Landau case?
Mickey: I like my chances.
Boss 2: That could be quite a 1)coup for us.
Boss 3: Its all very impressive.
Mickey: Thank you.
Boss 2: Youd be the youngest partner this firms ever had.
Mickey: There is a reason Ive not taken a Saturday off in seven days. I want this. Bad.
Boss 1: So does Todd. Hes been productive for a long time. Hes a quality associate.
Mickey: But I have been more productive. And I agree with you, he is a quality associate.
Boss 1: Youd be the only woman.
Mickey: Gentlemen, my father is a baseball 2)scout. And while he was hardly 3)attentive, the one thing he did give me was life experience. I took a lot of road trips. I grew up around men who swore, drank and 4)farted. Trust me, I can handle it.
Boss 3: Let us bring it to the partnership committee. Then well talk.
Mickey: Great.
Phillip: Absolutely 5)tremendous. Prescott just went 3-3 again last night.
Pete: Didnt he just get arrested for 6)assault?
Phillip: 7)Allegedly. Kids hitting .350, ready to move to Double A. So lets not rush to judgment.
Pete: Youve seen him play lately?
Phillip: I dont need to see him play.
Pete: You and that computer. Heh.
Phillip: Need to stay current, Pete. These programs are an essential tool to evaluate todays talent. In fact, theres only one scout in the entire organization, maybe in all of baseball, that doesnt use this technology. Maybe thats why hes only signed three kids in what, the last four years?
Pete: This is not a grocery store. You cant just go in and get what you want. Maybe theres nothing out there. Maybe his territorys a little thin.
Vince: What about Billy Clark in Rome? Didnt Gus sign him?
Phillip: Heh, yeah, and hes struggling. Kids in a big-time 8)slump.
Pete: Hell come around. Gus could spot talent from an airplane.
Phillip: I just hope were not missing anything, thats all. I mean, he is getting up there.
Vince: Should we send him to look at Gentry?
Pete: Of course. The Carolinas are his territory.
Vince: 9)Drafts in nine days. I dont want any surprises. Pete: Youre talking about one of the best scouts baseballs ever seen. Youre talking about the guy that signed Ralph Garr, Dusty Baker, Dale Murphy, Tom Glavine, Chipper Jones. The list goes on.
Phillip: With all due respect, Pete, the games changed. Its so much bigger now. Its global. Need somebody to keep up with the times. Gus couldnt even turn on a typewriter, let alone a computer. Look, we all hate to think it, but he may be ready for 10)pasture.
Pete: Busy?
Gus: Yeah. Just doing my homework, thats all.
Pete: Gus, did you ever think in a million years that computers would be a part of this game?
Gus: Computers? Anybody uses computers doesnt know a damn thing about this game.
Pete: You know, If you wanted to, you could access any high school or college 11)roster pull the stats on any player any time. You wouldnt have to waste your time with all these papers.
Gus: Im not wasting my time. I enjoy doing this.
Pete: You know, they got a special program now that can calculate a players stats and based on the competition hes seen tell you whether or not hes ready for the next level. You believe that?
Gus: Yeah, what else does it tell you? When to 12)scratch your ass? (laugh)
Pete: I dont like them either, but theyre a part of the business now.
Gus: Pete, scouts, good scouts, are the heart of this game. They decide whos gonna play, and if theyre lucky they decide how its gonna be played. But a computer, that cant tell if a kids got 13)instincts or not, or if he can hit a cut-off man, or hit behind the runner. Or look into a kids face thats just gone 0-4 and know if hes gonna be able to come back the next night like nothing happened. No, a computer cant tell you all that crap, Ill tell you. No. Pete: What do you think about Bo Gentry?
Gus: I dont know. He looks pretty good on paper. Ill take a look at him, see if he can play.
Pete: If the Red Sox pass with their first pick, I know Phillip really wants to take him.
Gus: Phillip. Well, tell him to check his computer. What we need is a pitcher. Yeah. Maybe, uh, he can find one on his interweb. Heh, heh, heh.
Pete: Have you noticed anything lately? Has he been acting any differently?
Mickey: No, he is as unpleasant as usual.
Peter: He been sick at all?
Mickey: I dont think so.
Pete: Mick, if something goes wrong up in Carolina with this kid Gentry, hes gonna be out of a job.
Mickey: Well lets hope that doesnt happen. That would be the end of one of the all-time great love stories.
Pete: He wouldnt do well without his work.
Mickey: What do you want me to do about it?
Pete: Carolinas beautiful this time of year.
Mickey: (laugh) No, no way. He has his life, I have my life. That is the way its always been. Thats the way he wants it.
Pete: Just for a couple of days. Just to make sure everything goes okay. Itd be really nice for you two to spend some time together.
Mickey: Nice for who?
Pete: If you wont do it for him, do it for me. Hes my friend for 30 years. I care about him.
Mickey: Dont try to 14)manipulate me. Im an attorney, thats my job. Im sorry, Im just…Im really busy right now. Pete: I appreciate your time, Mickey. I just thought you should know.
Gus: She was 13 years old, she was going to her first dance and she came in the room and asked me what I thought of her 15)outfit. I knew right then that she wasnt gonna be a kid any longer.
Flanagan: How old was Mickey when, uh…?
Gus: Her mother died? Six. That shouldve been me. No kid should be without a mother.
Flanagan: How did you handle all that by yourself?
Gus: I didnt. How about you, Flanagan? Dont you feel like youre over your head, handling a number one pick?
Flanagan: Ive been doing okay so far. Besides, youre here. Ill be fine.
Gus: This isnt exactly what you wanted to do, is it?
Flanagan: After my arm went, the Red Sox gave me a chance to, uh, you know, stay in the game. Theres gonna be a job in the booth next year, and lm gunning for it.
Gus: Announcing, huh?
Flanagan: Yes, Gus. I plan on bringing all that hard work and dedication I had as an athlete to my new profession as a broadcaster.
Gus: Well, ever think what wouldve happened if the Braves hadnt traded you?
Flanagan: No more than 8, 9 hours a day.
Gut: Yeah. Never goes away, does it?
Flanagan: No, it doesnt.
Flanagan: So You want to tell me whats wrong with Gus? You can trust me. Okay? When Gus scouted me, we spent a lot of time together. To be honest, when I got traded, I think it bothered him as much as it did me. Actually, I remember him saying he had a daughter in college. Yep. He would say that she was smarter than me and him put together. Thats why when I met you, obviously, I thought Gus had another daughter.
Mickey: Doesnt sound like my father. That sounds like a compliment.
Flanagan: Well, he said it.
Mickey: Well, he never tells me anything.
Flanagan: Maybe he wants to. You know? Doesnt know how. You might have to take the lead.
Mickey: Trust me, Ive tried. Im done.
Flanagan: As you know, to hit the magical .300, you fail 7 out of 10 times.
Mickey: Do you know what, um, therapy is?
Gus: What?
Mickey: Therapy. Ive been going since college. Its a long time. Just needed to talk to someone to help me deal with why you left me.
Gus: Did I say something wrong here?
Mickey: I just needed to, um, understand why after Mom died you took a 6-year-old to live with an uncle that she barely knew. And you left her there for a year and you didnt even call, not once.
Gus: We came here to watch baseball. We didnt come here to…
Mickey: Talk. I know. Everything is okay as long as we dont talk. But theres…theres no TV and theres no game on, so…its just you and me. So I…
Gus: I need a check here.
Mickey: And then you did it again. I had you until I was 13, until you sent me away to boarding school. And then nothing. Then you were just gone. Middle school, high school, college, nothing. And for a long time, I thought that I had done something wrong and thats why you left. But then I figured out thats just how you wanted it, so I acted like it was okay because I didnt want you to know how bad it hurt.
Gus: This is not the time or place to be talking about this. Mickey: Are you kidding? Theres never a time or place. Gus: What are you doing, anyway? Why did you start all this?
Mickey: Youre amazing…
Gus: Well, I guess now I go into a life of retirement for all the good service Ive given them. Always use another watch. Mickey: I shouldve seen it earlier.
Gus: No, it wasnt your fault. Phillip Sanderson sent that guy up here to make sure I didnt screw it all up.
Mickey: Well, things are definitely screwed up. So what do we do now?
Gus: Go home. Me, to a career ending, and you to a career thats just starting as a partner.
Mickey: I dont think so.
Gus: What?
Mickey: It was more important that I be here. Its, I…Gus: No.
Mickey: No, its all right.
Gus: No.
Mickey: No, Ill deal with it.
Gus: No. God, I worked my ass off so you could have more, and you…youre gonna throw it away on coming to a garbage can like this? Thats no life for a…
Mickey: For a girl.
Gus: Thats no life for a kid of mine. Living out of suitcase and visiting every shit-ball town in the area. Thats not what I wanted for my kid.
Mickey: Well I guess what I wanted didnt matter?
Gus: You dont even like baseball.
Mickey: I love baseball. You know I love it. I never even wanted to be a lawyer. I did that for you so that you would be happy with me and that you would approve of me and then maybe youd keep me around. Gus: I did what I felt was right. I just didnt want you to have life in the cheap seats, thats all.
Mickey: They werent the cheap seats. Spending every waking moment with my dad watching baseball, eating food that was no good for me, playing pool, staying up too late, those were the best seats in the house until you sent me away. Gus: Well I was just doing the best I know how.
Mickey: Only a coward leaves their kid.
Gus: Well, you dont know half of what you think you do.
Mickey: Okay, then tell me the other half. Goddamn it, Dad, talk to me. Dad, talk to me, please.
Gus: You remember years ago, down in Mobile, Alabama, they had the horse running around the field.
Mickey: Yeah.
Gus: They used to keep that horse in a trailer, down outside the bullpen gate. Anyway, I was talking to this kid I had signed, telling him theres no place for him in the Big Leagues. And all of a sudden I realized you were gone and I couldnt find you. I was 16)panicking. I saw this 17)shack there. I went…I went over and looked in and there you were with this guy. He had his hand down the back of your shirt.
Mickey: I dont remember that.
Gus: Yeah. How could you? You were only 6 years old. I sent you out, and then I started beating the shit out of this guy. I smashed his head against the wall and I started hitting him with everything I had. I strangled his ass. Finally, he passed out. Mickey: Oh my gosh, Dad.
Gus: I kept waiting for the police to come and arrest me, but they never did. Thats when I sent you to your aunt and uncles, because I thought theyd take care of you. I thought Id failed you. Your mother had died a year before and I was a mess. You have to understand that.
Mickey: Cant you understand that you sending me away wasnt proctecting me? It was rejecting me. And Ive been working really hard to not let anyone else get close enough to do that again. And being alone really sucks.
Vince: Well theres no doubt that Rigo Sanchez should be offered a contract.
Pete: You think? Heh.
Vince: And hes gonna need an agent.
Gus: Hes got one. Mickey. Shes a damn good lawyer and Im sure she can whip up some papers make that young man some money.
Phillip: Shit.
Gus: Or she could have your job because you sure as hell dont know anything about the game. And if Id have been any help along the way, shed be managing her own club now because she knows more about baseball than anyone in this room.
Mickey: Its okay, Dad.
Gus: No. Its in my blood and its in your blood too. I want you to be happy, thats all.
Woman: Heres the reports from last nights game.
Vince: What about you, Gus? Your contracts gonna be up. Are you interested in an extension? Gus: Ill think about that. Vince: Anything you want. You name it.
Gus: I said, Ill think about it.
Pete: Unbelievable. Billy Clark went 5-5 again. Hes been hitting close to .400 since his folks came to visit him.
Phillip: How much did it cost this organization to put his parents up? Thats what I want to know.
