The weather affects all of us in some way. For several years, researchers have been studying groups of people who become depressed when the seasons change. These people suffer from a condition called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Some people have a very slight form, which does not disturb their life too much. Other people have a serious form, and they are not able to function well when the seasons change.
Millions of people have SAD in some form. It affects about four times as many women as men, usually adults between the ages of twenty and forty years old. However, even school children can be affected by SAD. There are more cases of SAD among people who live in countries with a colder climate.
The most common form of SAD occurs in winter, when the days get shorter. The reason is that there is not as much bright sunlight in winter. Changes in seasons and weather cause chemical reactions in the brain that can affect our acts and feelings. For example, in winter, some people feel tired all the time and less interested in social activities. Others tend to overeat and gain weight. Difficulty with attention and work is also typical symptom. People with warm and pleasant winter blues probably dont need medical treatment. A long walk in the middle of the day usually helps and so do bright lights in the home and office. Special lights that provide man-made sunlight can be bought and are also helpful.
Although it is less common, some people suffer from summer seasonal disorder. It is thought that strong heat and humidity cause the problems. Symptoms include nervousness, sleeplessness, loss of the appetite and weight, and a lack of energy. There are not many ways to treat summer depression except for staying in an air-conditioned room.
51. Who is most likely to suffer from SAD according to the text?
A. A 45-year-old man. B. An 18-year-old girl.
C. A 12-year-old school boy. D. A 29-year-old women.
52. The common form of SAD happens in winter because theres ___ .
A. less sunlight B. more snow
C. lower temperature D. shorter night-time
53. The similar symptom of both winter and summer SAD is ___ .
A. tiredness B. loss of weight
C. getting angry easily D. a lack of sleep
54. The best title for this passage should be ___ .
A. Winter and Summer B. Weather and Its Effect
C. Knowing about SAD D. Problems with Seasons

BUKHANNON, West Virginia—Two rescue teams slowly moved along a two-mile path on Monday night to the site of a coal mine explosion that trapped 13 miners, who had not been heard from since the early morning accident.
Meanwhile, at a nearby church, more than 250 family members and friends gathered, waiting for updates(最新消息)on the rescuers progress.
The miners were trapped at about 6:30 am and many families werent informed of the accident until about 10 am—more than three hours after it happened. “Its very upsetting, but youve got to be patient, I guess,” said John Helms, whose brother, Terry, was trapped in the mine.
The trapped miners were about 260 feet underground and about 10,000 feet from the Sago Mines entrance, said Roger Nicholson, general counsel from International Coal Group.
At a late night news conference, Nicholson said one team had advanced about 4,800 feet in the four hours since entering the mine just before 6 pm. Another team entered the mine about 30 minutes later.
He said the crew was very experienced, with some members having worked underground for 30 to 35 years. The miners were equipped with about one hour of breathable oxygen each. The company has not released the names of the miners.
The teams test the air about every 500 feet, and have to disconnect the power to the phones they use to communicate with the surface before doing that. “We dont want to be energizing anything if its in an atmosphere with burnable gases,” Kips said. The cause of the explosion was not immediately known. High levels of carbon monoxide(一氧化碳)were detected shortly after the explosion, which delayed rescue efforts, but those levels have since subsided(減退), authorities said.

Since the 1970s, scientists have been searching for ways to link the brain with computers. Brain?computer interface (BCI) technology could help people with disabilities send commands to machines.
Recently, two researchers, Jose Millan and Michele Tavella from the Federal Polytechnic School in Lausanne, Switzerland, demonstrated(展示)a small robotic wheelchair directed by a persons thoughts.
In the laboratory, Tavella operated the wheelchair just by thinking about moving his left or right hand. He could even talk as he watched the vehicle and guided it with his thoughts.
“Our brain has billions of nerve cells. These send signals through the spinal cord(脊髓)to the muscles to give us the ability to move. But spinal cord injuries or other conditions can prevent these weak electrical signals from reaching the muscles,” Tavella says. “Our system allows disabled people to communicate with external world and also to control devices.”
The researchers designed a special cap for the user. This head cover picks up the signals from the scalp(頭皮)and sends them to a computer. The computer interprets the signals and commands the motorized wheelchair. The wheelchair also has two cameras that identify objects in its path. They help the computer react to commands from the brain.
Professor Millan, the team leader, says scientists keep improving the computer software that interprets brain signals and turns them into simple commands. “The practical possibilities that BCI technology offers to disabled people can be grouped in two categories: communication, and controlling devices. One example is this wheelchair.”
He says his team has set two goals. One is testing with real patients, so as to prove that this is a technology they can benefit from. And the other is to guarantee that they can use the technology over long periods of time.
62. How did Tavella operate the wheelchair in the laboratory?
A. By moving his hand. B. By using his mind.
C. By controlling his muscles. D. By talking to the machine.
63. Which of the following shows the path of the signals?
A. scalp→computer→wheelchair→cap B. wheelchair→cap→scalp→computer
C. scalp→cap→computer→wheelchair D. cap→wheelchair→scalp→computer
64. The team will test with real patients to ___ .
A. make profits from them B. prove the technology useful to them
C. make them live longer D. learn about their physical condition
65. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. Switzerland, the BCI Research Center B. BCI Could Mean More Freedom for the Disabled
C. New Findings about How the Human Brain Works D. Robotic Vehicles Could Help to Cure Brain Injuries

第一節(jié) 閱讀表達(dá)(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)
閱讀下面短文并按照題目要求用英語回答問題(請注意每題詞數(shù)要求)。
It was the first snow of winter—an exciting day for every child but not for most teachers. Up until now, I had been able to dress myself for the break time, but today I would need some help. Miss Finlayson, my kindergarten teacher, had been through first snow days many times in her long career, but I think she may still remember this one.
I managed to get into my wool snow pants. But I struggled with my jacket because it didnt fit well. It was a hand-me-down from my brother, and it made me wonder why I had to wear his ugly clothes. At least my hat and matching scarf were mine, and they were quite pretty. Finally it was time to have Miss Finlayson help me with my boots. In her calm, motherly voice she said, “By the end of winter, you will be able to put on your own boots.” I didnt realize at the time that this was more a statement of hope than of confidence.
I handed her my boots and stuck out my foot. Like most children, I expected the adult to do all the work. After much twisting and pushing, she managed to get first one into place and then, with a sigh, worked the second one on too.
I said, “Theyre on the wrong feet.” With the grace that only experience can bring, she struggled to get the boots off and went through the joyless task of putting them on again. Then I said, “These arent my boots, you know.” As she pulled the unpleasant boots from my feet, she still managed to look both helpful and interested. Once they were off, I said, “They are my brothers boots. My mother makes me wear them, and I hate them!” Somehow, from long years of practice, she managed to act as though I wasnt an annoying little girl. She pushed and pushed, less gently this time, and the boots were returned to their proper place on my feet. With a great sigh of relief, seeing the end of her struggle with me, she asked, “Now, where are your gloves?
I looked into her eyes and said, “I didnt want to lose them, so I put them into the toes of my boots.”
66. According to the passage, what did the author get from her brother? (within 5 words)
67. Why does the author say Miss Finlayson would remember that first snow day? (within 10 words)

One Sunday morning, a good many of travelers were watching a monkey play in its cage, next to which, in another cage was a parrot. The parrot was covered with color feathers. It said that the bird had never spoken since many years before. Later, anything unpleasant happened. A boy, no more than four year old, began to throw banana peels at a poor monkey. People turned to look at the childs mother and become angry—she laughed cold-heartedly! “Shame!” A clear cry suddenly broke out. And to everyones surprise it was the parrot! All laughed besides the young mother.
