皮埃爾·德·顧拜旦（1863～1937），是法國著名教育家、國際體育活動家、教育學(xué)家和歷史學(xué)家、現(xiàn)代奧林匹克運(yùn)動的發(fā)起人。1863年1月1日出生于法國巴黎的一個(gè)非常富有的貴族家庭。1896年至1925年，他曾任國際奧林匹克委員會主席，并設(shè)計(jì)了奧運(yùn)會會徽、奧運(yùn)會會旗。由于他對奧林匹克不朽的功績，被國際上譽(yù)為“現(xiàn)代奧林匹克之父”。

Pierre de Coubertin was born on January 1， 1863 in a noble family in Paris. He was the fourth child and also the youngest child in his family. His father was a famous painter. His mother was a descendant (后裔) of the noble. He inherited (繼承） a large sum of money from his parents.

1863年1月1日，皮埃爾·德·顧拜旦出生在巴黎的一個(gè)貴族家庭。他在家排行第４，也是最小的孩子。他的父親是一位知名的畫家，他的母親是貴族后裔。顧拜旦從他父母處繼承了大筆的遺產(chǎn)。

Coubertin spent his childhood in Normandy. At that time， he liked sports very much， such as boxing， rowing， fencing， horse-riding， and he also liked drawing and playing the piano. Very early in life he showed a liking for literature， history， education and sociology.

顧拜旦的童年是在諾曼底度過的。當(dāng)時(shí)的顧拜旦非常喜歡拳擊、賽艇、擊劍和騎馬等體育活動，并喜歡畫畫，會彈鋼琴。他早期對文學(xué)、歷史、教育和社會學(xué)很感興趣。

During 1875 to 1881， archaeologists (考古學(xué)家) continuously discovered the cultural heritage sites (遺址) of ancient Greek Olympic Games， which aroused Pierre’s great interest and concern. In 1890， he had an opportunity to visit the Olympus hill—the birthplace of ancient Olympics. He believed the spirit of the ancient Olympic sports can promote international sports’ development.

從1875年到1881年，考古學(xué)家在希臘連續(xù)發(fā)掘出古代奧運(yùn)會的文物遺址，這引起了皮埃爾的興趣和關(guān)注。1890年，他終于有機(jī)會訪問希臘的奧林匹亞山——古代奧林匹克運(yùn)動的發(fā)源地。他認(rèn)為宏揚(yáng)古代奧林匹克精神可以促進(jìn)國際體育運(yùn)動的發(fā)展。

On Dec. 25， 1892， Pierre de Coubertin delivered a lecture， in which he put forward

“Revive the Olympic Games”. In 1894， the International PE Conference was held in Paris. It decided the first modern Olympics would be held in Greece and the Olympics would be held every four years.

1892年12月25日，皮埃爾·德·顧拜旦發(fā)表演講，在演講中首次提出“復(fù)興奧林匹克運(yùn)動”。1894年在巴黎舉辦了國際體育會議。會議決定在希臘舉辦第一屆現(xiàn)代奧運(yùn)會，并規(guī)定每4年舉行一次。

On June 23， 1894， the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was established， the Greek writer Vike Las as IOC president， and Coubertin as IOC Secretary-General. And from 1896 to 1925 Coubertin presided over the IOC.

1894年6月23日，國際奧林匹克委員會正式成立，當(dāng)時(shí)希臘文學(xué)家維凱拉斯擔(dān)任國際奧委會主席，而顧拜旦擔(dān)任國際奧委會秘書長。1896年到1925年，由顧拜旦擔(dān)任國際奧委會主席。

In 1913， Coubertin designed the emblem (會徽) and the flag. The emblem was made up by five colorful rings which interlocked (連結(jié)) each other. The colors of rings were blue， yellow， black， green and red. The five rings symbolized (象征) the unity of the five continents and all the players in the world got together in the Olympic Games.

1913年，顧拜旦為國際奧委會設(shè)計(jì)了會徽、會旗。會徽由藍(lán)、黃、黑、綠、紅５個(gè)環(huán)環(huán)相扣的彩色圓環(huán)組成，象征著５大洲團(tuán)結(jié)以及全世界運(yùn)動員相聚在奧林匹克運(yùn)動會。

At first， Coubertin thought that the slogan (口號) of the Olympics should be “Unity， Friendly， Peace”. Later， one of his friends suggested that the solgan could be “Faster， Higher， Stronger”. It gained Coubertin’s appreciation. He said the slogan showed human beings’ great spirit of continuous improvement. So he advoted it as the slogan of the Olympics.

顧拜旦最初覺得應(yīng)以“團(tuán)結(jié)、友好、和平”作為奧林匹克運(yùn)動會的口號。后來，他的一個(gè)朋友狄東神甫提出了“更快、更高、更強(qiáng)”的口號，得到顧拜旦的贊賞，認(rèn)為它體現(xiàn)了人類永遠(yuǎn)向上、不斷進(jìn)取的偉大精神，以后便倡議它作為國際奧林匹克運(yùn)動會的口號。

Having spent his entire fortune on his ideals，he died on September 2， 1937 in a park in Geneva， sitting in a bench. He was 74 years old then.

顧拜旦為了他的理想事業(yè)花盡了自己的錢財(cái)，于1937年9月2日在日內(nèi)瓦公園散步，坐在一張長椅上猝然長逝，享年74歲。

He is considered one of the greatest men of the 20th century. In accordance with his last wishes， his heart was buried at Olympia， Greece， to commemorate the revival of the Olympic Games.

他被認(rèn)為是二十世紀(jì)最偉大的人物之一。按照他的遺囑，心臟埋在奧林匹克運(yùn)動發(fā)源地希臘的奧林匹亞，以紀(jì)念奧運(yùn)會的復(fù)興。
