3月26日，中國至澳大利亞首條集裝箱班輪航線首航式在青島港舉行。這是中國海運業(yè)第一條直達澳洲的航線。

March 26， the maiden voyage of the first container liner ship between China and Australia began in Qingdao. This was the first shipping line directly leading from China to Australia.

7月6日，濟南黃河第二公路大橋、濰坊至萊陽高速公路竣工通車。至此，山東高速公路通車里程已達1085公里，成為中國第一個高速公路超千公里的省份。10月31日濟南至泰安高速公路正式通車。至此，山東省高速公路通車里程達1359公里，居全國首位。

July 6， the No. 2 Highway Bridge over the Yellow River in Jinan and the Weifang-Laiyang Expressway were open to traffic. 9月25日，泉城廣場等省城三大工程竣工。1997年6月15日召開的中共山東省委常委擴大會議，根據(jù)濟南長遠發(fā)展的需要和城市建設中存在的薄弱環(huán)節(jié)，提出“用5年左右的時間，使?jié)系某鞘忻婷灿忻黠@改觀，綜合經(jīng)濟實力和服務功能明顯增強”的要求，確定了濟南機場擴建、繞城高速公路一期、泉城廣場、濟南污水處理廠管網(wǎng)配套、兩個水泥廠遷建、市區(qū)燈亮工程六大重點工程。此日竣工的泉城廣場、濟南機場擴建以及趵突泉擴建工程既是對建國50年的獻禮，也是這“六大工程”的重要組成部分，特別是前兩項工程的竣工，使省委確定的“六大工程”全部完成，從而揭開了省城建設史上的新篇章。

2月19日，青島港務局與英國鐵行集團屬下澳大利亞港口公司正式簽訂青島港前灣二期集裝箱碼頭合資合同，該項目總投資1.7676億美元，其中外資占49％的股份。這是全省目前基礎設施領域外商直接投資規(guī)模最大的項目。

3月13日，由墾利縣海洋與水產(chǎn)局承擔的“濱海鹽堿地滲水對蝦精養(yǎng)高產(chǎn)技術研究”課題通過鑒定。該項目在國內(nèi)尚屬首創(chuàng)，其技術達到國內(nèi)領先水平。

9月18日，在悉尼奧運會體操男子團體決賽中，由山東小將邢傲偉和另外5名選手組成的中國男子體操隊，奪得男子體操團體冠軍，實現(xiàn)了山東奧運金牌零的突破。19日，山東運動員林偉寧獲得悉尼奧運會女子舉重69公斤級冠軍。

12月12日煙臺開發(fā)區(qū)通過了國家環(huán)?？偩帧⑹…h(huán)保局、中國環(huán)科院環(huán)境管理體系認證中心等部門的鑒定，成為全國第五家、全省第一家ISO14001國家級生態(tài)示范區(qū)。
