1.get someones back up 惹某人生氣, 把某人惹翻了

A: What did you do to get her back up?

B: I only said she was easy to take offense.

A: And what else did you say?

B: Well, I also said she was not even a child.

A: But these remarks were enough to get her back up.

A：你怎么惹她生氣了?

B：我只是說(shuō)她愛(ài)生氣。

A：你還說(shuō)了什么?

B：我還說(shuō)她連一個(gè)孩子都不如。

A：這些話語(yǔ)就足夠讓她生氣了。

2.get the drop on sb. 先發(fā)制人，搶在某人的前面

A: Whats the score of the first half?

B: They got the drop on us and took the lead by 2 to 1.

A: We need to tie them to get the pass for the final.

B: It doesnt seem to be so easy.

A：上半場(chǎng)比分是多少?

B：他們先發(fā)制人，以2:1領(lǐng)先我們。

A：如果能勝了他們，我們就能出線了。

B：不容易呀!

3.get the sack 解雇

A: Youre in bad mood. Whats wrong?

B: My brother got the sack yesterday.

A: Why? I heard he worked well in the company.

B: Yeah,but the manager dismissed him with a ridiculous reason.

B: He said my brother fell in love with his secretary.

B：是呀，但經(jīng)理因一個(gè)可笑的理由解雇了他。

A：什么呀？

B：他說(shuō)我哥愛(ài)上了他的秘書(shū)。

A: Ive gotten wind of something, and there is a piece of good

news for you.

B: What is it?

A: Youll be promoted.

B: Is it true?

A: Yes, Im sure.

B: Thank you for telling me this.

A:我聽(tīng)到一些風(fēng)聲，有你的好消息。

B:什么好消息？

A:你要晉升了。

B:消息可靠嗎？

A:絕對(duì)可靠。

B: 謝謝你告訴我這個(gè)消息。

5.gild/paint the lily畫(huà)蛇添足，錦上添花，徒勞無(wú)益

A: I think Mary is not as beautiful as she was.

B: Yeah, she was an attractive girl before she married.

A: You see,her husband just gilded the lily by making her wear

expensive clothes.

B: Right. So she looks like all other rich wives around her.

A: What a pity!

A：我覺(jué)得瑪麗沒(méi)有以前漂亮了。

B：就是，結(jié)婚以前她挺嫵媚的。

A：你看，還不是她丈夫婚后要錦上添花，讓她穿昂貴的衣服。

B：就是。結(jié)果現(xiàn)在她看上去和她周圍其他闊婦人一樣罷了。

A：真是可惜！

B: Really? But why nobody even say a word with her?

A: Its a long story, just give a dog a bad name and hang him

B: I see.

A：她人其實(shí)很不錯(cuò)。

B：那為什么沒(méi)人和她說(shuō)話。
