This museum is an extension of the Queensland Museum and focuses upon four primary aspects of north Queensland history - indigenous culture, maritime history, natural history and coral collections.ts centrepiece is the HMS Pandora, the famous vessel shipwrecked off the far northern tip of Queensland. In 1790, the ship was sent to Tahiti to capture the mutineers from Captain Bligh‘s HMS Bounty. On arrival, the Pandora‘s Captain Edwards was informed that the Bounty was sailed away by nine mutineers; the remainder on the island were captured and put in irons on Pandora. Since Pandora was not designed to be a prison ship, Edwards had a cage (known as Pandora‘s Box) built to hold the prisoners. Having tried in vain to find Fletcher Christian, Edwards began the return journey to England via the Endeavour Straight between Australia and New Guinea, but struck the Barrier Reef and sank on 29 August 1791.Pandora relics are being collected in stages and are insufficient to reconstruct the vessel, but the active process of salvage gives meaning to the concept of a ‘living museum‘.The bow of the vessel has been replicated at full scale and is housed in a 12 metre high gallery with the remainder of the plan imprinted across the gallery floor. This gallery is roofed by a continuous three-dimensional curved ‘sheet‘ which carries down over the building podium onto struts, the structure a parody of rigging, inverted hulls and sails, as well as discernible metaphor for the indigenous ‘lean-to‘ or the ribbed cage of prehistoric creatures - recalling the main themes of the museum. The building contrasts an internal box (a ‘Pandora‘s box‘) encased in ‘broken‘ forms evocative of shipwreck. The internal box houses the main themed galleries, the more exuberant spaces accommodating children‘s‘ gallery and education areas, public facilities and café.The galleries are elevated above a podium containing the curatorial and storage areas, which can be glimpsed through narrow slots from the wharf side of the museum. On the street side, the elevation is graduated from it‘s ‘deconstructed‘ end through a series of transitions, to unify at the other end with an abutting historic corner building. Colours perform an important role in attracting visitation, used selectively against raw materials, and textures are introduced to induce a tactile as well as visual response to history through the museum.
